Help Choose! Glock or Kimber?

I know the 1911 vs Glock debate is a touchy subject... however I have neither one and am purchasing a Glock 17 or a Kimber 1911. I have already sent in payment for the Glock, but am considering applying that money towards a Kimber instead. I already have a full size 9mm (Beretta 92FS.) I know I want a 1911 eventually. The gun will be for home defense and range practice. Possible cold weather concealed carry.

I am really thinking towards the 1911 right now, as I don't have a .45 in the collection and just really like the weapon. Glocks are also great handguns at a great price. Light, reliable, and accurate out of the box. This is a tough desicion. I guess it is not really either/or but which one first?

If you...

...already have a high-cap 9mm and are jonesing for a 1911, then a Glock 17 (nice as it is) is not going to satisfy that need. You'll find yourself in a week or two drooling on the 1911 cases at the shop.

Go ahead and get a Kimber, Springfield or Colt; if you don't like it, you can always trade it for a Glock later.

I have a G23 and a Kimber Pro CDP and the accuracy between these two is pretty extreme. The Kimber is way more accurate than the Glock but not near as tough. The Kimber collects a lot of residue where the Glock doesn't. Personally I like my Kimber much better, but my Glock is also a great gun. My advice would be to get one of each. They are both unique weapons and each has it's good points and bad points.
But if have to choose, go with the Kimber, simple because you need to hit what you are shooting at.

I've always favored Glocks over Kimbers which I have shot. Why not get a Glock 21 if you must have a large .45? Or rather get a .40 caliber Glock 22 or 23 (23 is better bet for year round carry)

SIG P220

Look at the SIG P220. An extremely accurate, extremely reliable .45 that has a nice trigger pull and great accuracy, right out of the box, for 2/3rds the price of an equally accurate M1911. I thought everyone already owned a Glock?

I suggest that you write Glock on one side of a coin and Kimber on the other. Flip the coin and buy the gun that lands up. You can even go for the best two of three if you don't like the first toss.;) :D

I agree with Tamara
Recently, I wanted a USP 45 compact, but I bought a PT-145 instead. 2 months later I sold the PT-145 and got the USP.
Get what you want the most. You can always get a Glock someday, but if you already have a 92FS, a G17 will still leave a gaping hole in your collection where a .45 could be.
If you're going to end up with both anyway, I would get the more exotic gun first.
You already have a 9mm. The Kimber should keep you entertained until you can get the G17.

Nif, you are asking about 2 different guns. The 1911 has the short reset trigger, and the Glock has everything else... Both are excellent handguns, and in my experience, the only 2 to consider, it all depends on what you value more.
The Glock is the ultimate in reliability, with some going to 300.000 rounds. The 1911's are the ultimate in trigger control! Even us die hard converted "EX-1911" Glocksters will not argue that a 1911 doesn't have the best trigger available!

What Tamara and Jearne said!

The only way to deal with the 1911 itch is to buy one. It won't go away so it's better to take care of it now. Kudos on selecting the Kimber as the object of your affection (affliction?) as it is a great choice.

I think 9x45 nailed it. Get the one that you REALLY want right now and save for the other one. Get both, is the only right answer.

Yes, Sig is a great gun. I have a P239 and it is excellent. Glock 45s have a great reputation. However, for my first .45, I want a 1911. Part of it is the tradition and beauty that only a 1911 can bring. If I were to buy a .45 other then a 1911, it would be the HK USP45 right now. However, it is not the .45 caliber I am interested in, it is the 1911.

Second, I can't afford both right now. Everyone always chimes in with "buy both." That is a great suggestion for people who have too much many setting around just to spend. I can't afford both at this time. Yes, I plan on eventually owning both, but I have to have money to take care of priorities in life.

For me, I am not a huge Glock fan. They are light, reliable, and accurate straight from the box. They are good guns, which is why I want one eventually. I have handled 1911s, but I have honestly never gotten to shoot one. I have shot Beretta, Glock, Sig, HK, Walther, Taurus, Ruger, etc... but never a 1911. That is where my problem lies. I love the looks and feel of the 1911s, but have never had the chance to shoot one. I don't really care for the Glock looks, but they shoot well. Plus, the Glock is quite a bit cheaper. I can easily afford the upgrade to the Kimber, but making the descision is pretty tough.

Blades...

A friend is throwing a wrench into the picture... someone just mentioned the Wilson KZ45! The best of both worlds. Polymer frame 1911 with Wilson parts! Wilson makes an awesome gun, and that is the only one remotely close to my price range at this time. I will really really have to check it out,

Mo...

Yes, they are VASTLY different guns. Which makes it harder to choose. If they were very similar, I could make a decision easier based on price and other factors. This is about to drive me insane but it sure is fun :D Oh well, I will get the prices on the Kimber tommorrow and see if he can get a KZ45. I should hopefully be able to make up my mind by tommorrow. But knowing me, I will change my mind 87 more times between now and then.

No pistol collection is complete without at least ONE 1911 in it. You already have a 9mm, so go for a Kimber/Springfield or Colt 1911 to fill that .45 void in your collection. The Glocks can wait... :D

Everyone who collects guns has at least 1 1911 in it. Since you don't, yet , & you want one...get that Kimber 1st. ;)

I say neither. Go with a G-21. It's 13+1 of .45 acp (best of both worlds) IMO this gun is the best .45 out there. KZ-45 looks great too, aparently it was designed from the ground up as a 10+1. Never shot one of them though. Kimbers
are great guns, but I love high capacity pistols. 7 or 8 +1 just doesn't do it for me.

Forget the G21

Why don't you go for THE best of both worlds and get a Glock 36!!!:D
  • 1) It's a .45!!!

    2) It's a Glock!!!

    3) It's small and thin enough to be concealed anywhere on your body. I carry mine in an ankle holster or an IWB or... :D

Even if you don't want to carry concealed, see #'s 1 & 2!!!

For me, I am not a huge Glock fan.

May I be so bold as to ask why you're contemplating the G17 then?

You already have a solid 9mm in your collection. You want a .45 ACP, because you don't have one and you want one really badly.

Sounds to me like you're on your way to owning a 1911. :D

Come to think of it, I don't own a 1911!

(Santa, did you read that? :D)
