Does the OP have a 270? He does not say but two reference to it.
A 270 is going to be about the lighter recoil of the large non magnum cartridges. (308 nest step down)
It as it may not work with your shoulder but a good recoil pad might do it. My bother put one on his 7mm Rem Mag and claims its a pussycat now (I still have to try it so will see, sometime in the next couple of months now its started to warm up on the range)
I have shot both in the 7mm and 338 in non recoil pad. 7mm is by far the worst (and I have shot a 375 H&H as well.
Barring that a heavier 30-06 would be good but also with a limb-save or equal if you need that heft of caliber.
Still have not seen the hunting use so its a bit open. 270 with a 165 gr bullet is good enough for Elk or occasional moose though I would not be my first choice to shoot bear.
If it was just bench work I would go with a Model of 1917 with a recoil pad. That thing is so heavy that its fine to shoot as much as I want without a recoil pad and with one it would be 260 or 243.
