Heirlooms for the kids

My 2 boys are in their 30's - but one is outside the US / and the other one has his life in flux right now ....but when they settle down - I will give each of them:

1. a nice 5" 1911 in 9mm and .45 acp .../or maybe a SIG 226
2. a S&W 4" revolver model 66 or 19 in .357 mag
3. a "Trap" shotgun / 32" barrels, Browning Citori XT
4. a general purpose shotgun / 30" barrels, Browning Citori XS Skeet model ..

with the idea of a nice semi-auto handgun, a nice revolver and a couple of good shotguns --- for them to shoot and enjoy now / because good guns cost a lot of money / and raising their families, they shouldn't be buying guns.

I have a collection of 50 guns or so now ....

When I finally pass / then I've designated a few guns to the grandkids / but most of the rest of the collection that I shoot often / the nicer 1911's (like the Wilson Combats), the nicer revolvers (model 27's, 29's, etc), the nicer shotguns in 20ga, 28ga and .410 will be split up and go to the older boys - and I've made up a list that sits in my safe so my wife does not have the responsibility of figuring out what goes where ! The list is sort of important to the boys / and I want them to know I've thought about it - and how to split the collection up. At the same time, if for any reason my wife needs the money - she can sell any or all of it as well. My point with the list - is it isn't fair to ask your wife ( who will outlive most of us ) to just take care of it - with no list or without my specific wishes.

Just like I've asked my wife to do on her jewlery ---so I know what goes where...and one daughter or one granddaughter doesn't just assume who gets the diamond bracelet, the sapphire bracelet, etc ... and I sure don't want to make that decision if she preceeds me.

( and everything just needs to stay locked up / and left alone ....for at least 6 months after one of us is gone ) ....let the emotions settle down....

I hope the legacy and the collection will move down in the family from my boys / to their kids ...and so on / for several generations. I can't say I buy things specifically to pass them down ...but I buy nice guns ....guns that I like to shoot ....and I'll be proud to pass on. Not everything is expensive / many were bought used and cleaned up ...but virtually everything is a weapon that will live for many, many years --- I hope.

My collection is different from everyone else ...but all I'm saying is, at least think about it ....and don't leave your wife the burden of making decisions down the road.

My Grandfather gave me his old Winchester Model 67 single shot .22 rifle. It was the only inheritance I held other than one of my Father's two dog tags from WWII. I do not have anyone to pass things on to other than my Wife. So, I gave the rifle to my Nephew a few years ago to keep it going in the family.

For some strange reason, I suspect it will end up in a pawn shop if not already. The remainder of my guns will probably end up sold by the estate upon my dealth along with several hundred antique clocks and a couple of hundred more pocket/wrist watches. The good feeling is to know it might just help my Spouse enjoy her later years; although it will not be needed since she is well endowed on her own rights.

Much of my collection probably came from the estates sold by offsprings. Part of the joy of collecting is researching the background of items. It is some times easier with monogramed pocket watches. It kind of documents how much of inheritances are sold off soon after the death of the collector. I guess the world goes round and round.

It is a generous and heart-felt thought on your part, but you might want to inquire. Many offsprings may prefer the old Do-Re-Me.

grandson's birthday

My dad died in 1995 and left my son (his grandson) a 21st birthday present. My son was 7 at the time of grandfather's death. Last year son (grandson) turned 21 and I presented him with a 70's Colt Gold Cup. It is a prized possession! He was enjoying shooting it and then started realizing worth (he has the original box and papers, probably has about 200-300 rounds through it, mint) and he has put it in the safe.:p Not sure how many times he plans to shoot it anymore.
