Heavy Barrel Rimfires

I have a Marlin 880SQ which has a very heavy barrel.
I love it, but the only real advantage I see is it is muzzle heavy which helps me steady up to take a shot.

weekly match

Bamaboy and I had our weekly mini match tonite with the Mark II Savage TR at 100+ yds. Drug out the Sinclair bipod and the rabbit bag and 10 rds each on a 100 yd scaled down F-target. Ten rounds, 10 pts each, clean sheet is 100. CCI hi-vel which nearly shoots into 1MOA at 100 for 5 shots. WE shoot 10 cause its easier to score, our target is two bulls on one sheet of typing paper, one per each of us. Typically shoot at another for sighters before we shift to the clean targer "for record".

Last week, with the wind gusting the Boy won with a 72-1x. I shot a 67-0x and the kid was tickled he beat me. Tonite, with near calm, I shot a 95-2x to win, he shot a 90-1x. The 1/2MOA x-ring is proving elusive.

We could benefit from better ammo, but CCI is on hand and does OK. We are shooting at about 125 yds or so, I've not lasered it. We are asking more than the rifle/ammo combo can give, and having a blast. Tonite, both our 10 rd groups (125 yds) were at 2 MOA .

Out shooting tonight, just got back a bit ago - still light now at about midnight, and one of the firearms was my "only one piece left on it that says Ruger" 10/22.

I set up about quarter size chunks of broken clays at 125 yards and had a big smile on my face as they disappeared one by one.

I generally don't push out past 200 yards max with this rifle; for reaching out around 200 yards and further, I have a .223 for target practice. Pretty much take both every time out.

One can learn a tremendous amount about "lone range" shooting with a .22lr without the really "long range".

And for what it is worth, I do have a heavy bull barrel with a tight chamber; this seems to work wonders for accuracy.

One fun, seasonally plentiful, and free reactive target: dandelion seed heads, you know the white spheres. Get a direct hit, the very top of the stem - center of the sphere, and watch them all fly! Miss by a little and only a part of the sphere goes. One of my favorite targets of all time.

In the heavily German settled reigions of central Texas, there are a group of shooting clubs (schuetzen vereins) that shoot at 200 yard targets with .22 rimfires shooting from a standing rest, a rest supports the front of the gun and a standing shooter supports the rear.
These are all custom guns made just for this sport often using a barrel extension (bloop tube) to increase the sight radius.

For a real challenge try shooting the Highpower target #SR42. [300yd rapid reduced to 200yds] using a .22 rimfire from prone w/sling. I don't believe anyone makes the official 200 yard smallbore target any more[A-24] but the #SR42 is very close.

If you are determined to stay Rimfire for 200-300 yards shooting, move up to .22WMR :)
My personal pick for a new rifle is the Marlin XT-22MVSR (.22WMR) which I hope to buy one day after my newborn twin sons
allow me to have a few bucks again ;) http://www.marlinfirearms.com/Firearms/xt/XT22.asp

Or go .17 HMR, which is a necked-down .22 Mag case with a tiny lil 17-grain bullet.

I prefer the .22WMR, as you can vary bullet size from 30-grain up to 50-grain & lots of selection in between...
and you can usually have enough left ona squirrel to eat if you use .22WMR, with .17, meat gets all fubar.

I want a 22lr so I can simulate 600-1000yrd centre fire shooting. If i were going to buy a 17hmr, i may as well buy a reloading kit and reload for my 223

OK, I understand what your trying to do. My first impression:

Since 600-1000m target rifles are best designed to stay super-sonic all the way to the target, The 22LR will not reproduce this same effect. You could start it out sub-sonic or if you start it out super-sonic and it will break back down through the sound barrier. Either way, you may not get an exact effect shooting a 22LR at 200m that you will get with a HP rifle at 600m.

I agree with some of the others that it will be fun and a learning experience, SO...go for it. I'd like really to know how it works out.

Only after thought I have is - If me I'd try to match the trigger pull of a practice rifle to the one I'd be competing with.

did you say iron sights?

If you are going to shoot iron sights the longer barrel will give you a longer sight radius which will help you. CZ has put out some models with an unusually long barrel and some good iron sights I haven't seen one except in pictures it looks like it would be a lot of fun.
