Heavy Barrel 30-06 Cabella's

I pulled some random bullets to check coal to the lands.

Hornady 178 gr. A max, 3.42

Berger 155 gr. Full Bore Target, 3.55

Hornady 168 gr. Match hpbt, 3.406

Speer 168 gr. Match, 3.476

I loaded up some 165 gr. Hornady's and If I recall they were 3.42 to the lands. I loaded those back around 3.36 and they shot fine. Half the fun is getting there........

My brother let me shoot his Remington HB 30-06. Interesting in comparisons to the Savage 308 HB (varmint barrel)

These were all shot at a slightly extend range of 110 yards not 100, so the MOA is better than the direct measurements by at least 1/16 to

Despite the trigger, with the Remington I put 5 or 6 rounds (lost count) into a 3/8 inch group (one flyer, if its that bad I discount it as a oddity though you would not in competition) . Not as good as the even smaller SuyperCub99 group which was a jaw dropper, let alone first loads through.

The stock is good, not as good as some wooden ones but good.

The Savage Heavy barrel on the other hand has the great accu trigger, the stock is ho hum. Ok but not nearly as good as the Remington.

That said the Remington shot out of the box far better than the Savage, despite the supposed superior and agnostic load reputation of the 308.

After 4 or 5 session I finally got the Savage shooting pretty consistently under 1 MOA with one very nice group of .250 and two more under half.

I had to go back to the drawing board with the Savage and go with low loads and shorter COAL. It may have a node up in the higher speed range but I did not find it (consistently , some good to very good 4 shot groups and then the odd 5th shot flyer someplace in the mix, not always the last one.

I like the action on the Savage better, it feels smother and more positive though not as good as the good 1903s. Not that matters for shooting but it is interesting.

Frankly if I had known about the Cabella 30-06 HB that would have been my choice, I don't regret the 308, bullets are common I can cross use the press bases.

I don't know if its typical of the 308, this one is definitely a bit picky but if you hit the node then its got the Savage accuracy you read about.

Despite comment on the barrels being rough, this one is clean as a whistle.

I would highly recommend boht guns. Savage really needs a better stock though I am going to live with current for now, Remington needs a better trigger.

Both are capable of amazing accuracy you used to see only in custom barreled guns.

I went back to the drawing boards with the Savage 308 HB (Varmint) and got the results I was hoping for.

Basically the Cabelas 12FV looks to be at least a 5/8 or maybe even 1/2 shooter. Variances above that look to be the shooter and the loads.

COAL was very important, it needed to be backed off .025 (Hornady bullets, others with a different ogive shape may vary) once there I have not shot a larger than 1 1/16 group and that's at 110 yds, so call it 1MOA.

It likes A2495, IMR 4895 and A4064 produces good loads all tending under 5/8. R17 gets some outstanding 4 shot groups but so far not 5. Will play with that more.

This is with a heavy cross hair target scope.

With that capability I can tell if another rifle is me or the other variable (rifle, loads, scope setup.

As long as I can wear my large glasses the stock works ok, my smaller backup set that fog up less do not have the width of vision I need so harder to get into scope center.

However, Berger bucked the common "wisdom" that even they adhered to, and now suggest that VLD's will shoot well with a lot of jump- once the sweet spot for it is found, dispelling the "kiss" or even "jam" the lands philosophy:

tobnpr, If my rifles do not like ‘the jump’ or running start they do not get shot. There is something about a bullet setting at the lands trying to get started that I do not like.

Then there are heavy barrels, I saw an advertisement for heavy barrels, $25.00 each. I purchased 3, a builder of wildcats bench rest type rifles ask if it was too late to throw a couple for him; magnificent barrels.

Then there was this auction for a “what was he thinking” sporterised rifle. I could not believe anyone could build anything that ugly without knowing what he was doing. As expected the forums had a field day. I had an interest in the total sum of the parts for #120.00, I won the bid. Before I started sorting parts I took it to the range with 6 boxes of ammo of 12 different loads, cases powders and bullets. The rifle liked everything. It got hot so it took all day. Because of accuracy I applied the leaver policy I lefter the way I found her.

Yall all kill me with all this online gun buying. My local dealer is much cheaper than the online gun sites. Of course the price I pay is not the price on the sticker, but buy a couple guns from a local dealer and they start treating you right.

With all due respect, neither one of the two guns we bought was on line.

Both were bought from local Cabalas store thank you. Said Cabalas has raised the available reloading supplies by 2/3, local gun shop does not offer anything like it (only one, the rest none)

I got the 308 that is consistently sub 9/16 MOA (hand loads) for $380. The Remington was on sale and a very good price for a HB rifle let alone a HB 30-06 which are non existent. Special order price would be around 1000 and it was gotten for less than $600 I believe.

So please do not comment when you obviously have not read the thread and where guns were bought let alone impose your views on others situation when it does not apply.

I respect peoples choice to get their guns where they think it serves them best, not me.

I was not talking about you. Look through the thread and you will see what I was referencing. You go off having a fit and you are the one who has obviously not read the entire thread.

I started this thread and am well aware of what's in it.

there is one reference to online buying, so what? Your statement was broad scattered in saying YOU GUYS which means everyone.

Further, its really off topic and frankly none of your business as to where people buy their guns. It was not a question that was asked.

If you want to discuss that aspect of gun purchasing start a thread to that affect.
