heat

"Hard use is one thing,,abuse is another."

So, you mean I SHOULDN'T be using my SKS as a jack handle when I work on the car?

The abuse part I view as having shot the gun until the handguard started to smoke. No disagreement there.

Putting out the potential fire with some water? I view that as saving it, not abusing it. :)

JBass, a hot gun barrel is no problem. Stainless Steel gets much hotter much quicker than carbon steel. It' won't damage anything. Besides, "Happiness is a Warm Gun."

"I GOT BLISTERS ON MY FINGERS"

44 Mag Redhawk, 32 rd IPSC field course, blistered my trigger finger where it contacts the frame.

sorry bout the fuss

I'm sorry about all the fuss yall. I'm so anal about this particular gun cause it's my primary defence gun and I want it at the absolute top of it's performance. If there would be some small thing to mess it up, I would feel better just using a different gun so I don't have to risk my life because of a little damage that makes the difference. Thanks.

"I want it at the absolute top of it's performance. If there would be some small thing to mess it up...."

Well good lord, then man! Don't shoot it! Shooting causes wear and tear! :D

Actually, just treat the thing sanely, the same way you'd treat any other object you'd want to last for a long time. In other words, use your gourd. If it doesn't seem right, chances are, it's not.

hehe

Thanks Mike. For some reason, what you say always seems to make me feel better. Youv'e got a good point. Thanks everyone for all your input.

Good, Bass. I'm glad I can ease your mind.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go see how many times I can pop the clutch on my Outback with the emergency brake on before the clutch plate exits stage left. :D

Mike,
Always doing research on mechanical devices in the "name of science and the bettering of mankind!" LOL :D
I love it.
Bring a steel barrel down from a hot temp should be done slowly...or it does risk changing the "OEM spec" temper if there is any. Let the heat disepate on its own and your always safe.

Springs should always be replaced before the OEM recommends...IMO, but I should have invested in Wolff a while ago. I do this because I like to shoot fairly hot ammo.....
Kahr recommends every 2000 rnds..good rule to follow.

Shoot well

If you are going to use coolant, do it before the barrel gets too hot and the temper will not be altered.

Running water THROUGH rifle barrels is not an entirely bad thing if done prudently. Dipping a handgun in bucket of water isn't goint to hurt a thing if done before it gets screamin hot.

Common to cool guns used in endurance/reliability tests.

Heck, about 50 rounds out of a HK P7 and your trigger finger will be frying.

When my 686 barrel heats up, I just put on a fresh one ala Weigand Combat.:D Sling Shot
