Heard some stuff today...

All ammo is perishable, it just takes 20 to 300 years or more.

Maybe they put some type of bacteria in the metal that make it dissolves.

Pretty good humor, but I hope it's not true, mainly California, were the lawsuits will run wild.

Ya know, I hate to be this way, then be "called out" on it , and God knows I hope I'm wrong, but I've been getting wind of quite a few similar things, over some period of time, and from some pretty good sources.

With the Technology we have today, Nitrocellulose, I'm sure would NOT be that difficult to alter and serve to the civilian market. The "government" would have theirs, and we'd get the crap that only lasted 2 years.

Bro's, I very much hope I'm wrong, but I've heard QUITE A FEW "rumors" regarding the Basis of this Thread. I hope I've just read into some typical B.S. and I'm WAY off base.

.....Please check out my last Thread...............

I suspect it could be made... can't figure out why they couldn't

now whether they could sell it... very few fools would buy it... unless it was dirt cheap and you used it for target practice before it's expiration date....

I guess what would have to happen is 'they' would have to pass a law that all ammo had to be made with an expiration date... kind of like they did with bottled water.

we're shuting down production and we're going to start manufacturing *perishable* ammo" such as give a certain shelf life. Is there any validity to this?

The perishable ammo rumour makes the rounds every so often and I guess in this enviroment it takes off pretty quickly.

Then she replies that she had another customer come in today that works at the Lake City Ammo plant nearby and he states "we're shuting down production and we're going to start manufacturing *perishable* ammo" such as give a certain shelf life.

Yeah? Well my cousin's wife's brother's friend's uncle Fred has a very reliable (but as yet unknown) source in the industry that say's it's false.

Gee, can you imagine the lawsuits? Some guy uses the ammo as it gets close to the expiration date, and it turns out to be a squib because part of the ammo doesn't ignite. Follow that with a good round, and he gets his hand blown off.

Hmm..methinks not.

This is just one of a series of dumb rumors that have circulated during the last year or so. All it proves is that the internet allows stupidity to go viral, fanning the flames of panic.

For what it's worth, here are a few other howlers that have made the rounds:

1. The feds (or some State government, take your pick) have enacted a law which requires every bullet to be inscribed with a unique serial number. Manufacturers have announced that ammo prices will increase geometrically and supply will contract to near nothing.

2. The feds (or, again, some State government) are on the cusp of enacting a law limiting purchases of brass or reloading supplies.

3. the feds (or a State) are about to, at any moment, reenact the assault rifle ban and the magazine capacity limits.

None of the above are true, of course. The only "evidence" there is supporting any of them is that, occasionally, legislators or Congressmen file proposed legislation which has no chance of passage but which, if passed, would contain some of the provisions I've just cited. But, that's just politics because it's easy to introduce legislation that has no chance of ever becoming law.

Here's the reality. Since last November's election the federal government has done exactly nothing to restrict ownership or use of handguns or other arms. I repeat, nothing. Nor is there any likelihood that such laws will be passed. The United States Senate is firmly controlled by pro-gun legislators, Democrat and Republican and would block any measure that restricts handgun or other firearm ownership and use. What HAS happened in the last year is that Congress has passed, and the President has signed, several measures that actually loosen up federal regulation of handgun use.

So, chill out folks. The sky ain't falling and it ain't gonna fall.

It's most definitely true, PM me for my address I will buy all your 22m, 38, 357, 9mm and 223 at ten cents on the dollar.Included in your purchase will be a raffle ticket for a chance to win the Brooklyn bridge.:D

Lake City makes ammunition for the US military. NOT for civilian consumption (except ammo that is surplused out).

What a wonderful thing to do... Produce ammo that would go into the Government supply train with a "drop dead" date.

As far as actually doing something like this, no, it's not as easy as one would think.

Given the lot to lot variations in gunpowder already, even when the manufacturers use the same materials, it's very very doubtful if they could accurately make a cartridge that would expire after a definitive amount of time, say 5 years.

What would happen if it was stored in a cool, dry place? Would it last longer then if it were stored in a hot, damp location?

What would happen to the life span of the ammo under transportation to a combat zone half way around the world, and storage in a forward ammo dump where days might be blazing and nights might be freezing?

As others have said, these rumors, and many like them (like a secret Gov't funded organization is using stimulus money to buy up all the primers to keep ammo supplies low ) are just that - rumors.

They're to be laughed at, with suitable amounts of finger pointing and ridicule.

It must be true. I can verify I heard the same thing at a gun show nine years ago.

It started around 1995, when Winchester introduced a new line using lead-free primers. Something went wrong, and there was a high percentage of duds.

Then someone started a rumor that Winchester was in cabal with the Clinton administration to make "expiring primers." We called it the Great Primer Famine of 1995.

It shouldn't have shocked me that such a rumor would make a comeback in the current climate, but it still saddens me. I'd call anyone who spreads it a liar, and to their face. I've had it with the irresponsible rumor-mongering.

So, chill out folks. The sky ain't falling and it ain't gonna fall.

Oh it's falling alright. It's just falling from a lot higher up then anyone expects, so it'll take longer to reach ground zero. But boy, when it gets here, it's gonna be screamin' ;)

I think the shooter from show me is stirrin the pot for reactioooooooooooooonzzzzzzzzzz!

Heck NO:p! I just posted up what I heard. For what it's worth, it would be a huge liability. I was just asking for any factual truths to it. But it is not me stirring said pot:rolleyes:, maybe the WalMart employee or the butthead from said Ammo Manufacturing facility:mad:. I say that cause on another forum, where I know someone who works at said ammo facility. Stating they were not having their October employee purchase for ammunition. Maybe this was a disgruntled Lake City employee that's mad because he can't buy ammo at the plant and can't find what he's looking for elseware. ALL I CAN SAY TO SAID LAKE CITY EMPLOYEE IS JOIN THE CROWD, BUTTHEAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Lessee, the consensus seems to be: BS!

We agree. Closed.

(This rumor pops up about every other month or so. If the customer actually worked at LC, he was either making a joke -or- he was fired for stupidity and that was the excuse management gave him.)
