Have you heard of the new "Palm pistol"?

Looks like junk to me. i have seen things similar to that before. IMO, I would rather have a can of pepper spray. Maybe even a whistle.

others having limited strength or dexterity
While I agree with the concept, the thought of someone with these conditions having a loaded weapon scares me not a little. What's the chance that they shoot themselves with it? Could someone like that deploy and aim it properly? And on that subject, that thing can't be accurate at over 3 feet...kinda letting the guy get too close, huh? A good pepper spray will give you 10-15 feet.

This is a one-shot deal. If the victim misses or doesn't stop the threat, they're history. I kinda agree that a SERIOUS pepper spray would be a better choice.

Wrong caliber

My jury is still out. But consider these items:

Single-shot (can it be reloaded rapidly, at least?)

No sights at all. Is not encouraging of practice.

9mm (with no magazine, why not spend a few extra thousands of an inch to use a .45ACP or .45 GAP?)

concealability - here's where it could have an advantage

safety - how much protection against accidental discharges is there?

Price. The WWII "Liberator" single-shot pistol was made for a few bucks apiece in 45 ACP and dropped over occupied territories so that resistance fighters could take an infantryman's PROPER fighting weapon from him. I expect the palm pistol could be marketed for a lot less than these people's price.

Right now, I think this pistol is not ready for market. But is a great idea. Of course, I think all means of self-defense are great ideas. Just some work better than others.

What does anyone think of the company's attempt to qualify the palm pistol as a medical device so that medical insurance could help pay for it?

I wonder how long before ATF changes their minds and designates this thing an AOW. Oh, about the first time it appears on the TV news, I bet.

Remember, a pen gun is an AOW because it doesn't look like a conventional handgun. Neither does this.

Looks like more of a gimmick than a useful firearm suited for protection. Can't say I see any particular use, or even a potential market, for such a 'thing'.

It isn't the gun I worry about, it's the potential users. The gun appears to be targeted at a market that includes people who have given up driving because they're no longer safe behind the wheel. I think of my parents in the final years of their lives and the thought of one or both of them with something like that makes me shudder.

So just what IS the point? It's a gun, so it's automatically a great idea? I think not. As far as I'm concerned, it's a joke.
I find it odd that people are so completely dismissive of this gun.Perhaps you would be willing to take that single shot to the sternum?

Junk...has been on the web as a concept for over 2 years. Supposed to be for old people. Kinda looks like an aspirator. Guess it might be usefull in a hospice unit however.

That appears to be a 'gut' gun at best. I also have concerns about crap from the anti-gun groups about a gun that doesn't even look like a gun.

Alright, so here we are again. Everyone trashes a product, but no suggestions for a 'valid' replacement.

What lethal protective weapon would you guys recommend for people with very limited mobility and dexterity?

My mother worked as an OT, mainly with stroke victims. So I at least have a little understanding of the situation.

my cousin has cerbreal palsy and doesnt have the stregnth to hold a normal hand gun, between the recoil, and the weight.

this looks like something he could use.

you can also get it thru medicare.

This is always a stupid argument. Just because the bullet would hurt doesn't make the gun, caliber, bullet type, etc. a good design.

I would not want my 7 year old to beat me with a wiffle bat about the head, but that doesn't make her an effective defense force with it.

Of course with the palm gun, the real question would be whether or not the shooter could actually intentionally shoot another person in the sternum. That is part of the design problem.

The single shot aspect is a serious shortcoming. At least the old Chicago version is a 7 shot. Ammoland claims their palm gun is suited for home defense. That seems awfully shortsighted.

Hay guys the gun was never made or marketed. If you research. a little further you will find their address is a house. You can google the street view.
12 Hoffman Street, Maplewood, NJ
They want you to send them some money to help develope it too. Maybe in 2010..just need more money.

The point? This gun has no point. It's ROUND.

I believe you have missed their points (though I have to admit it may have not been clearly put). Allow me to be specific.
1) A person unable to manipulate a small revolver in 9mm or 38 special is probably not capable of handling the palm pistol properly, much less practising with it.
2) A single shot is simply a tactically poor choice despite the fact that most gunfights are over after one shot. A second or third is sometimes needed.
3) A gun with no sights whatsoever and next to no grips is very hard to hit with and not encouraging of practice. Practice is essential, not only so you can hit what you intend and know how your gun performs and feels when it goes off, but also keeps you in the protector/warrior mindset that is esssential for self-defense.

And those are just the points I have discerned and leaves out completely the legal implications of a gun that (at least in the pre-production drawings) less like a gun than an inhaler. (sorry, that was not meant as a jibe, I just couldn't resist. It DOES look like a vaporizer or nebulizer or the like).

I actually do like the concept. I just don't think the design is up to it yet.

P.S. If it was offered as a two-shot in 454 Casull or 500 S&W as a bear defense gun, I might be interested.
