Have you ever...

And why does it have to be a ".45 1911"??? so, am I poorly armed because I prefer to carry a Smith & Wesson 4506?

I could argue that mine's better, because it's SA/DA...

but, shouldn't I carry my .45-70 Contender, because it's not only .45 caliber, but it's got a HUGE case and powder charge?

I'm guessing you're one opf the 1911 fanboys... there's nothing wrong with a 1911, but they aren't the only decent gun ever made!

I carry the most caliber that I can and still remain concealed. When I carry a smaller caliber its because it is necessitated by the circumstance for that day.

Mabye I don't really understand the question.

Hemicuda- I see I'm not the only one to carry a 4506 in Mich :D. I can hide it easily, even in summer attire, and while my first love in auto's will always be a tuned 1911, for concealed carry I like the SA/DA Smith. It shoots great, is accurate and always functions properly. Plus I am confident in it, and competent with it.

The motivation for asking the question is inconsequential as far as I am concerned; therefore, I will give a truthful answer. Women, please forgive me. Since my writing largely reflects my own experience, it feels natural to use masculine pronouns. I am not leaving you out. ;)

Perhaps I am just a sap, but I believe that there's a bond between a man and his gun that must be fully explored before the owner can truly use the weapon to his greatest facility. If the .32 pocket pistol was that weapon then you bet I'd want to be carrying that over the .45. Of course, it's really the man, not the machine.

KD5NRH is right

Hi all,
I'd say KD5NRH is on to something when he tells about his discovery of the hog.
I had a similar experience with a 10 foot long alligator in a bass boat full of brother in laws. He never made it fully in to the boat but had his head and front legs up on the rear casting deck and was in a pretty bad mood.
I was the only one armed and had a pocket Beretta in .22.
Luckily, he was clubbed back into the canal before I had the chance to irratate him more with the .22.
Things like this and KD5NRH's hog will change your mind about what you carry.
For what it is worth, I was allways confident in the .22. It shot great and to the sights. It was always reliable. I shot it well and found it a comfort to have around and easy to carry. All the things most people state for carrying a small cal. pistol. I have not carried it since.
I'd have to recommend the most gun and the best ammo you can carry and shoot well.
Thanks
Mike

If I need to stop someone, I'd rather have my Ruger .22LR than a .32 and especially a .22 Mag over the .32. I'd rather have a .45 than a room full of .32s.

One of my friends has a large collection of 32s. Has been acquiring them for over 30 years. Revolvers, semiautomatics, large frame, small frame, pocket size, target, etc. He can wear you down with 32s. He is never without a 32 or two in his pockets.

But he has one 1911 45 that his father gave him.

The only pistol I would rather carry than my 1911 is an AR pistol, . . . and I don't carry one only because I don't own one, . . . yet, . . . and if Osabama will give me enough slack, . . . I just may be packing a real funky looking shoulder holster some day:D:D:D.

May God bless,
Dwight

I'd care LESS about the caliber of the gun (ALL HAIL THE GLORIOUS AND BLESSED .45! ALL HAIL THE GLORIOUS AND BLESSED .45, FRUIT OF THE LOINS OF OUR SAVIOR, JOHN MOSES BROWNING!)

I'd care one hell of a lot more knowing that:

1. My chosen gun operates flawlessly.

2. My skills will allow me to, if necessary, hit my target where I need to hit my target.

JohnKSa had it right for the right reasons in Post #13. If you have any kind of firearm, you're armed and most defensive gun uses don't involve shooting.

But when those are not the case, and when one can handle the 45, how would one make the decision that today I will carry the 45 and tomorrow I will settle for something less ?
I can handle just about anything. I usually carry either a 38 snub or a Beretta .22 by choice. I don't consider it less, I consider it different. Any of them will do the job, but some of them need to be deployed or used in different ways to do the job.

Agree that mindset and proper training are the most critical things in self-defense situations.

Agree that the pistol you have with you beats the pistol left behind.

Agree that many self-defense situations do not require that shots be fired to be resolved. But one had better not pull a pistol without the presence of mind to complete the task if necessary. Bluffing can lead to a very bad situation.

Agree that not every situation allows for a larger pistol to be on your person.

But think too many times people carry a smaller pistol when a larger one would be suitable because it is convenient. And convenience is not necessarily consistent with proper mindset. The life you save may not be just your own but ones very dear to you.

Doesn't have to be a 45 1911. Some might handle a S&W 44 better. Or even a Colt SAA 45.

.

If we have never wished we had pulled a 32 instead of a 1911 45...

Why do people carry a 32 in their pocket and leave their 45 at home and thinked they're armed ?

Have you ever been in a situation where you needed a gun and pulled out a 12 gauge shotgun and wished you had a .45 instead? Then why leave your 12 gauge at home and think you're armed?

In some situations and for some people a .32 is just a heck of a lot more practical to carry than a .45. Like a .45 is a lot easier to carry than a shotgun.

I thought....

....the thrust of this thread was going to be about Code Red situations that turned out not to be (ohhh, they're playing Airsoft or someone's filming an action movie) and the large .45 proved to be embarrassing....

Well, .32 is just too darn small. Now, my .380: that's a hard caliber.;)

If I could carry a 1911 everywhere without impacting my primary activity or sweating too much from the required concealment garment, I would. (Although maybe in 38 super instead of 45.) However, the mouse gun in a front pocket holster allows way more athletics and conceals in shorts weather--I still have little tykes that need chasing on the jungle gym and like to race daddy; I wouldn't want to be guilty of brandishing because I had to take off running and my jacket blew open.

In an ideal world, if I find myself in a Code Red situation, I'd rather be worrying that all my bros brought enough gun, not just what I'm packing.:D

No, that would not be my wish. I'd wish to stay calm cool, not to panic, and to end the situation without any harm to innocent people or property, no matter what I would be carrying at that time, I don't need the biggest gun. ;)
