Have you ever took a "varmint" with your pocket or carry gun?

I did when I was working on the job. I asked to use the lavatory and as I was saddling up to the porcelain goddess to drain the one eyed lizard, a rat came from behind the toilet and bit my shoe. I pulled my Ruger .357 and shot him thru the spine. It died instantly. Thing was as big as a small cat. The hole in the floor was only an inch or two from the toe of my boot. Scared the heck out of me cause it was totally unexpected. Lucky my nick name isn't now ol' 4 toes!

I love small game hunting with a .22 pistol.
I guess that's why I own four and I have taken rabbits with my little Bersa 223 DA.

I have also used my BuckMarks to dispacth several dogs that had been brought out to the country and set free by city owners that couldn't do the right thing by an unwanted pet.

I did drop one coyote with a S&W 3913. I was on my way to town when a coyote crossed the road 'bout 50 yards in front of me. I pulled up to where he'd crossed the road, then stopped my truck and drew my 3913 (it was my carry gun at that time).

The coyote wasn't in a big hurry but was moving away from me down a row of maize. From the truck seat, I braced my arms on the window sill, sighted just below it's shoulders, and took the shot at about (paced) 30 yards. It dropped in it's tracks with a broken back and was dead when I reached it.

Yes in the past few months I have really suprised myself with a Walther TPH I have. The first time I was working down on the farm tearing an old building down when I noticed a ground hog close buy. Being that I had the TPH in my back pocket I thought I would try and sneak up on the varmit.I got within 15 yards and he went into a hole.I got closer to the hole and was about 30 feet away. When the ground hog poked his head back Up I took a pop shot at it. It went down into the hole and after about 5 minutes I decided to go and look for blood. To my surprise the stinger had done a good job hitting it in the neck.
About a week ago i was working in the barn and heard a thump (kinda like a snake dropping down onto a board)in the rear portion of the barn. Of course I had to investigate. Sure enough there was a snake streched out and crawling up a board. I took the little TPH out and tried a shot from about 25 feet.I missed the first time but that second shot hit it.As i saw blood running down the board i knew I had hit the snake.Once again those stingers were deadly in that little Walther.I can't believe how accurate this little pocket gun is.Could be because the barrel is of fixed design.

I've disposed of a couple of prarie dogs at our shooting range. They had taken to digging dens under the shooting benches and wouldn't be dissuaded by any other means. I shot the first one at about 7 yards with a 9mm Browning Hi Power. I was using a handload with a 90 grain Speer JHP. It completely decapitated the varmint. The second was a couple of weeks later. I shot this one at 22 paces with an SVI, .38 Super, IPSC gun. I put the red dot of the PDP3 right on his chest and the 124 grain FMJ hit him in the throat. He dropped like he'd been hit by a brick.

I regularly hunt jackrabbits with my handguns. There is nothing like it. The first time I took a handgun larger than a 22 out looking for jackrabbits, I punched a 38 caliber hole in one's ear with a wadcutter. It looked like someone popped through it with a big paper punch.

Feral house cat, head shot, 90 gr Super Vel JHP from S&W Model 39, ten feet.

Feral house cat, 25 yds, HOT 38 Spl 110 JHP from my duty Model 19 .357. He was crouching, looking directly at me, in front of a concrete wall. He ran, leaving NO bullet mark or blood on the wall. Found him next morning about 50 ft. away. Center front chest hit, no exit.

Feral house cat, three feet, as he ran past my feet, Model 19, 110 gr. Super Vel .357 Mag, hit between shoulder blades, no exit.

Skunks and armadillos, several of each, 20 ft to 20 yds, Commander LW, various 230 gr loads.

Skunk, 15 ft., Head shot with Browning .40 High Power, Win. 180 JHP.

Small stray dog, 25 ft., pre-war Colt Woodsman, Remington 40 gr. Solid, head shot.

Opossum, ten feet, under wife's van, in stand off with her Scottie, head shot with .380 PPK, Fiocchi 88 gr. JHP. Instant kill.

Opossum, ten feet, at roadside, with my partner's .22 derringer. Took four rounds to kill it. This is NOT a ‘possum combo.

Rattle snake in camping area, 10 ft, head shot with Colt 1908 .380, 95 gr FMJ.

Copperhead snake, five ft range. Bauer .25 auto, old Win ball tipped Luballoy bullet. Head shot.

These were spur-of-the-moment targets and don't include animals shot during regular hunts. You carry pistols lots of places, you get to make lots of shots.

xxero,

Do all those rules apply to every state, of just the one you live in?

Methinks it's the latter...

I admit that shooting from a vehicle is generally frowned upon for taking game animals.

Here in rurual Texas, coyotes are not considered game, perhaps they are where you live?

Here in WV, opossum, coyote, crow, european starling, woodchuck, etc. have no bag limit - continuous open season. However, shooting from a vehicle is almost certainly restricted, and I wasn't about to take a chance on getting arrested for capping off rounds going 70mph+ on the interstate just to take a lousy coyote.

Also, I honsetly don't think it would have been a "one shot stop" with a short-barreled 32ACP either - this was easily the biggest coyote I had ever seen, probably 70lbs+. When we first saw it, I said "what in the heck is that?" and my fiancee said "I don't know, it looks like a small deer".

However, if we wouldn't have been on the interstate and I thought I could have gotten away with it, I would have done my best to empty all 8 of those 32ACP Cor-Bons into that goon. Coyotes do enough damage to the calves and smaller livestock here to warrant being a little cruel.

I've never considered being a nuisance grounds for cruel, inept execution. I hunt, and I eat what I hunt. Don't take any pleasure in killing helpless animals for sport.
Killing to protect pets and livestock is justified, but it should be done humanely, with a weapon suitable for the purpose.
If my views offend, too bad. People who take pot shots at any animal not explicitly protected by law or circumstance do more to hurt shooters and gun owners than all of HCI's campaign contributions.

quote:
Domestic cats are protected too -- even when they're "feral."

You people should maybe get a copy of the fish and game laws and read up on the regulations. [/quote]

To quote from the Ohio 1999-2000 Hunting and Trapping Regulations:

"PROTECTED SPECIES including yellowlegs, plover, snowshoe hares, bears, badgers, otters, bobcat, and nongame birds may not be hunted or taken at anytime; Hungarian partridge may not be taken except from a shooting preserve, dog training area, or field trial."

I don't see any mention of cats, at least in Ohio.

Also, regarding coyotes, the regulations state "No closed season for hunting or trapping" and "No limit".

For domestic animals, it's not the Fish & Game regulations that you need to worry about; it's the animal cruelty laws.

There was a guy here in Kali who was charged with felony animal cruelty, or whatever it's called, for killing a dog with a bat (it bit the face off of his child and he tracked it to its home and finished it off).

Disremember if the guy was convicted.

I have a Glock 23 with a Lasermax in it. I am an avid squirrel hunter. Last year I quit after 30 squirrels were taken, so far this season I have shot 10. I have shot six possums bothering my cats in the middle of the night. 2 racoons and a couple of wild cats. To anyone that has never tried a Lasermax, it is hard to believe how much better offensively you are with it. I shoot open sights all the time to acquire and keep good basic shooting habits. The Lasermax lets you really hone in on your target. It is the best varmint combo I know of.

I live in the country on a few acres and its not too uncommon to have stray dogs etc running around. On more than one occassion when walking around the back of the house or around the barn a strange dog with an attitude is there. The ever present Commander has an immediate behaviour modification system in it, HydraShok. Seven years and about eight dogs, four possums under the house, three skunks in the barn, and a few snakes etc. The house, the barn and the shop are mine, they can use the rest of the place all they want.

My grandpa took out three feral cats on separate occasions which were killing his cats. He used the Chinese version of the Mauser Broomhandle. Not sure what caliber.

He was one of the bodyguards for Sun Yat Sen in Hawaii. So he retired there and we lived on his farm and he shot these cats with me holding the flashlight each time.

Hey,

my parents own 215 acres in Johnstown NY, outside of Amsterdam, and 50 in Bethel NY, outside of Monticello. while out doing farm chores and other miscellaneous things, i have taken about 40 (!) GroundHogs from anywhere between 5 feet and 40 yds with my Dad's S&W .22 10-shot 8 inch barrel. Also, numerous crows, rabbits, foxes... and a wild dog with a .357 S&W 6" barrel that nearly took my 3 yr old sister's head off. I know people object to shooting stray dogs, but this was a rather malcontented mutt that was threatening my sister's life. I didnt stop to think about how the dog fealt about the situation. probly 70-75 pounds. head shot that left it incapacitated.

thought i'd throw in my two cents

I hope when i can vote, there's something left worth voting for.

I have a Beretta mod 21 I carry all the time. My key ring is heavier, bulkier and lumpier so it is just 'forgotten' in the pocket holster.

Once I was walking my dogs down in the swamps and there was an altercation with a nutria, which is a giant water rat about 2 feet long. (The dogs said the nutria started the fight and I took their word for it.)

With the nutria having scored several free bites and dog blood all over the place I euthanized him with one shot to the center of body mass from about 5 yards. Couldn't take the time to find out specifics of where he was hit due to the need to care for the dogs. :(

Nearly forgot a number of snakes and several angry wild dogs through the years who were put to sleep using various and sundry pistols mostly larger caliber. The nutria was most exciting though, as my dogs will testify. ;)
