With all due respect to Ayoob, he has a lot of book knowledge, and I do read his work for entertainment and perspective, but he has basically no real world experience on the matters that he talks about.
Anyway, one time I was pumping gas into my truck at a gas station in the middle of the city, in the middle of the day. In midst of pumping gas, a truck full of thugs rolled up and told me that I was "going to give them some money". There were a few in the cab and a couple in the truck bed. They stayed in their truck, wisely while they told me that I was going to give them money. I told them "No I am not" and they said "yes you will" as they piled out of the truck to kick my skull in. I reached in the cab, and grabbed my Glock 20 10mm and emphasized "NO, I AM NOT!". They jumped in their truck and took off hastily.
The clerk came running out of the store and told me that this was the third time today they had committed that same crime. The clerk watched it all happening, and (as he had twice before), he called the Police. The Police rolled up a few minutes later, and said they had come by twice before for this crime. Of course, my question was: why didn't they hang out and wait for them to come back (how can someone commit the same crime in the same place three times in a row and not get caught?), and also, obviously the police are useless to help you in these circumstances because even though this was the third time this day that this happened, it still took them several minutes to show up. I would have been dead or maimed by the time they got there, had I not been able to protect myself.
As Dangus said, most violent crimes are commited by people who have been drinking alcohol. I believe the number is %80 of violent crimes involve alcohol. But, outlawing alcohol would be as successful as outlawing drugs….it does not work. Personally, I have seen plenty of people who have smoked marijuana, and they were always far from violent…makes me wonder why alcohol is legal and pot is not.
