Looking for a handgun (preferably a revolver) in 22LR, I found this nice gun...
Soon to be mine when the paperwork comes in... :D
Seems to be a very accurate sweet little revolver...

Alot of gun shops have a range, and will let you test fire a used gun provided you buy the Ammo. blacksheepone ALL of those H&R 9 series revolvers are TACK DRIVERS. They will just SHOOT. Sad they are no longer made.

Exact Deerslayer. The range is next to the gunstore so.... after checking out what was available I tested the ones I liked and the two H&R's came out on top (they had a 929 and a 949 they had a single action Rohm too but that turned out to be kinda crappy despite the looks...). This one I liked the most so.... I just let myself go an bought it.
Pitty I'll have to wait about 3 months (at least.. damn paperwork and registration) before I can take it home...

These used to be shown in ads on the back of gun magazines...>

...and I was always attracted by them. They were obviously lower to mid-level in terms of price/quality but they certainly looked sold and had a pleasing simplicity about them. I recall the ads showed 3 versions including (i think) a 10 or 12 inch barrelled one.

The vast majority of reports I've read about such H&R revolvers over the past decade or more have been positive. No-frills but good guns. I'd like one of these myself, but they are less common than hen's teeth in my part of the world.

I hope you enjoy yours when you eventually get your hands on it.

"3 months? What foreign country do you live in? "

Probably New Jersey. ;):D

We need a permit to buy a handgun here, and the last time I applied it took 2-1/2 months.

blacksheepone,

My first handgun was a H&R fall out cylinder .22 revolver.

The second one was a H&R 949! I used it for years.

Don't let anybody put you down for using that gun. I had many years of enjoyment shooting it and learned alot of my handgun skills off it.

I have one in 32 H&R that works just fine. My daughter likes it so much that I recently purchased a 22 version with a 4" barrel for us to shoot together. I am waiting for it to arrive at my local FFL in the next few days. It looked practically unfired, so I splurged and spent $200 on it. You can usually find them for $150 or less. I remember when they still made them and they cost less than $100 new. I guess I should have bought one back then instead of waiting for the price to go up. :)

The 3 months is a minimum waiting period here in Belgium. Most European countries have what you guys call "liberal" governments. I call it leftwing.
I have this 38-40 SAA Colt made in 1907 that was free to own before the laws changed once again and had to register it. They made me wait about 3 months for it too. It's been family property for years since my dad bought it somewhere in the late 70's ....
Believe me, I know about gun control by government and it's realy NOT a good thing nore does it increase safety and it sure doesn't reduce crime. It's just a way to get money out of your pockets. ( 100 euro or about 120 dollar everytime you register a new gun...)
Hang on to your second amendment , that's what I say. I'm so fed up with leftwing Europe I decided to take my chances in the DV lottery...

Anyway back to the H&R ... I'm pretty confident it's a gun that will give me a lot of fun and satisfaction. I'm aware though of the small issue with the mainspring assembly and mainly the plastic part on top and decided to change the mainspring assembly with an all metal one from numrich immediately when I get it from the gunstore even if the original still works. Just to make sure...
It's realy a nice revolver...

H & R 949 serial number

Hi blacksheepone, and all other members. I'm new to this forum and happy to see that I'm not the only Belgian. I can confirm blacksheepone's explanation about gun permits in Belgium...my previous permit took 5,5 months!

Anyway, back to the H & R 949; my wife bought exactly the same 949 last Friday as blacksheepone did, with color casing and serial number HH. Can anyone help me to date the production year of the 949 please ? I also wonder how these revolvers can turn up brand new in Belgium while H&R stopped the production in 1994, I think ?

Thanks for your help guys !

Hi Rickchamy and welcome to the forum, the HH serials are actually not H&R original guns as I discovered. They where made by Gardner. They're referred to as H&R Gardner. No worries though good quality make.

Hi blacksheepone, I can't find any information on these revolvers produced by Gardner, I only find that they where produced at H & R in Gardner, Massachusetts and by NEF also produced in Gardner Massachusetts. But I cannot find any info of the revolver being produced at Gardner Guns. Can you provide me with a link regarding more info on the production of our current 949 please ? My wife and I really like this little gun's looks, and we would love to know more about it. Thanks a lot!

H & R 1871

Hi Blacksheepone,

I wrote to the customer service of H & R 1871 and got a prompt reply (even though is Holidays).....great service! The customer service assured me that the revolver is produced by H & R 1871, in Gardner, MA. USA in 1994. I guess you bought your revolver at the same place we did (Podevijn) ? And I'm not sure what your serial is, but if it starts with HH it means that it was produced by H & R in 1994.

Happy New Year to you all !!

I like them. I'll be picking up a 929 with a 2 1/2" barrel in 22 LR this morning. Probably about the same lockwork, just a different barrel and grip.
