I am looking into a Ruger American for around that

I think the competition has driven the price for real shooters way down. With modern manufacturing, it's not as expensive to make a great rifle. So for me the used market is a little less enticing than it would be given my cheap nature. It's almost like electronics. That 512 MB iPod at $50 just isn't a great bargain.

Not saying I'd turn my nose up at a pre-64 Winchester 70

...and $447 for the savage...no DBM. Does this influence any choices as made towards the Savage? I will probably get it still buty i know Bass pro has Savage with good Nikon scope and DBM for $519...decisions, decisions!

I decided...

I went with the ADL 700. Thanks everyone for your help. In the end, I could not justify to myself paying more for a Savage tha was comparable to the Remington. The trigger is good out the box, but it is not user adjustable....but I think it will be okay. Thanks again, everyone!
