Hands down best .40 HP

If there was a best load in any caliber, you'd only have one choice in defensive ammunition.

Speer Gold Dot, Federal Hydra-Shok, Federal HST, Winchester Ranger T, Cor-Bon DPX, Remington Golden Saber, to name just a few of your good choices available. And that's not even getting into the different bullet weights available.

What ever the boss buys for duty carry. Right now, its the Fed Hydra-shock. No officer involved shootings with it in our department. Yet.

Its Pepsi ....

and Hydra Shoks ...in my guns ... Hydra Shok .40S&W seems to feed well in my little Sig 239, my Sig 226 and my 1911 ... ( I use them in my .45 acp carry gun as well - which is my primary ).

Ditto on the Pepsi...:D

As far as the ammo is concerned, call me old fashioned but I've always been impressed by the design and ballistic characteristics of the Federal Hydra-shoks. I keep my two primary weapons (462 Rossi and XD-40/service) loaded with Hydra-shoks. I've never had to fire in defense, but I'm confident if I did, the Hydra-shoks would get the job done.

There's no perfect magic bullet. There are differences due to weight, velocity and design. I do read the ballistics tests and while I hold a certain amount of faith in them these are done under controlled conditions. I have also seen where a slight difference in bullet angle or hitting bone makes a difference. I try to stick to what seems to work for law enforcement such as the FBI who most likely does more testing than anyone.

I Also like to read reports of actual shootings and in doing so one learns what has a better track record but that also can be deceiving. Many facts are left out such as, where was the victim shot, at what range, what was the victim wearing, were there any barriers, even barrel length can have an effect on bullet performance. Scenarios are different and no bullet will be perfect, but one may perform better a higher percentage of the time.

I try to stick with what most of Law Enforcement uses especially the FBI as they seem to do extensive testing. Right now from what I have read the FBI has adopted Winchesters new line of personal protection bonded ammo, which is available at Walmart of all places. I think if one sticks with HST by Federal, Winchester Bonded law enforcement, or most Gold Dots they should be alright as long as they do their part.

I have a preference for the 155 grain JHP in .40, and like the Remington Express 155 grain JHP because the former Border Patrol apparently had great luck with it. I also use the Winchester, Speer, and Federal variety of the 155 grain load.

When I bought my first .40 (approx 6 months ago), it came with a box of Hornaday Critical Defense rounds. I bought a couple more boxes and liked them for the fact that they all fed through my gun and went bang every time, however they seemed somewhat inaccurate (maybe it was me learning my new gun though too). I've switched to Federal and I'm currently running the hydra shocks and have had some good performance out of those. I've recently done a bit of research on different ammo testing and from everything I've read, the Federal HST's are suppose to be an even better round than the hydra shocks are. I've got some HST's on the way but haven't shot any yet. In those same ammo reports, they also have complemented the Ranger's, Gold Dots, etc that where mentioned previously in this thread. Though I havn't done price checking on much of the other ammo, I love the fact that you can get HST's and Hydra Shock's for under $25/50rds.

Winchester Supreme Elite PDX1 180 grain Bonded ...

I second this - it's one of, if not - THE BEST ammo for your .40 S&W handgun;) Expensive but worth it when your loading up for your life -
