There's no perfect magic bullet. There are differences due to weight, velocity and design. I do read the ballistics tests and while I hold a certain amount of faith in them these are done under controlled conditions. I have also seen where a slight difference in bullet angle or hitting bone makes a difference. I try to stick to what seems to work for law enforcement such as the FBI who most likely does more testing than anyone.
I Also like to read reports of actual shootings and in doing so one learns what has a better track record but that also can be deceiving. Many facts are left out such as, where was the victim shot, at what range, what was the victim wearing, were there any barriers, even barrel length can have an effect on bullet performance. Scenarios are different and no bullet will be perfect, but one may perform better a higher percentage of the time.
I try to stick with what most of Law Enforcement uses especially the FBI as they seem to do extensive testing. Right now from what I have read the FBI has adopted Winchesters new line of personal protection bonded ammo, which is available at Walmart of all places. I think if one sticks with HST by Federal, Winchester Bonded law enforcement, or most Gold Dots they should be alright as long as they do their part.
