Handguns: Cost vs. Quality

No way Ruger and Taurus are even close to being in the same class. Taurus is just a cheap copier of other peoples designs (and a poor one at that)

Would you like to back that statement up with any data or is this your opinion.

As far a Stoeger Cougars, Beretta does not make them anymore. Stoeger does but these are the same pistols Beretta introduced in the 90s. Here is a link to an article from guns and ammo mag

Beretta owns Stoeger - Beretta just had these moved to Turkey for mfg.

Remember - “The bitterness of poor quality is remembered long after the sweetness of low price has faded from memory.”

No hard data on Taurus quality (or lack thereof). Just do a search of the various firearms forums and you'll find LOTS of Taurus complaints form actual people who bought them and later regretted it.

Never had a Taurus revolver, but I have had a lot experience with their 9mm PT92/99 line. Except for the somewhat fragile sights on the PT99, performance and quality has generally been good.

I have Taurus 85 ULBH (Ultra Light Bobbed Hammer) revolver and I am very happy with it. Over 1000 rounds through it so far and not a single problem. trigger is best of all my snubbies (I also have 4 J-Frames) I have had it stripped completely as I do my own armorer work and everything is in top order. I bought the Taurus basically just for fun but it has become one of my EDCs. I'm not one of the "many" malcontents. Would I buy another? I am already looking at a 6" barreled .22 revolver from Taurus!

You are correct. There are some people who do not like Taurus but there are a lot of people who do like them. Following is a link to a law enforcement forum discussing Taurus handguns and the reviews are mostly positive.

Point is that you should not condemn a good manufacture because of a small number of people do not like the product

I think Ruger is underrated. I just got won over by a P89 a friend of a friend brought to the range. He paid $250 for used (previous owner shot a box of ammo through it and shoved it in the night stand for a year or two). Excellent value for the money. I may pick up a P345 next year just for fun. It's nice that someone makes a good pistol that is cheap enough to buy just for fun.

commodity or tool

I never bought a gun for its 'value'; I intend, when buying, to keep them forever (no, it hasn't always worked out that way).

Taurus handguns have inconsistent quality, enough so that many cannot recommend them based on actual experience. Just because some folks get a good one (or a bad one) does not make them all good (or bad).

I never recommend any gun that has seen only limited production, or is hard (or impossible) to readily find parts and/or repairs for.

"Cost" is personal; "quality" is quantifiable (mostly). "Cheap" is easily determined.
So is "crap".
I don't get them mixed up.

There are many many choices available to us today, but some are popular (or unpopular) for good reason.
Hard to fault anyone buying a Ruger or S&W or Glock or Springfield Armory or Dan Wesson or SIG or H&K or Kimber or some others.
I mean, if they plan on actually shooting their new gun......

I vote for Glock in both cost and quality. When you purchase a Glock, you get plenty of firepower, interchangeable magazines between same caliber pistols, and you get a pistol that you can fix yourself, and you don't have to be a gunsmith to do it. There are tons of aftermarket accessories (although I prefer mine stock except for night sights), and when you have a 9mm Glock, you slap in a factory 33 round magazine, you've got some serious firepower.

I know they're not the best pistols to look at, but they will get the job done when you need them to. Many people complain about the grip angle, well go with what works for you. Glock works for me!

good advice above

And if Glock pistols don't point well or feel comfortable to you, there is both the S&W M&P series, and Springfield Armory's XD offerings.

This is now an old thread, but I'll reply originally, since I missed it first time around.

dissention in the ranks

I must point out my experiences with Taurus pistols is one of, at best, mixed success.
Except their 92 clone....

I do not recommend that brand, unless one knows exactly what one might be in for.
