handgun safe.

I have one of those minivault safes. The battery thing is a real PITA - they go dead about every 2 months and it takes something like 8 AA's. I gave up putting batteries in it long ago. I just keep the key right next to the safe. It's good enough to make sure the kid won't get into it....for now. That's all I really wanted it for anyway.

My only concern with a digital safe is what if the battery goes dead while the guns are inside. Most people can not remember to change the batteries in their smoke alarms...

The Gunvault safes do have a manual key which will open it with no power as Skans says. I am not sure what is wrong with Skans' Gunvault though most people have said the batteries last a long time. Mine is still going well after 9-months. My regular safe requires both a key and the electronic combination, Which means when the batteries go it will require reseting the combination after replacing the batteries and opening it with the factory default combination. So far it has been fine for 2.5 years on the original batteries.

I know the minivault makes a plug-in model. What they need is plug-in - rechargeable battery backup. If I were to buy one today, I'd buy the plug-in model.

Make sure you can still access the safe if the batteries go dead and not have to get a lock smith to drill it for you.

The Stack-on has a key for backup. Also, lfor those of us that can no longer see the manual dial to enter the combos without reading glasses, the push-buttons are great; even without looking I know which button is which number.

Something's definitely wrong with yours. Mine still has the original batteries I put in it, and it still works after several years.

Have a Gunvalt safe bolted to my file cabinet...

This will hold 4 large pistols. It's biometric and is openned with finger print that can be set from 1-4. Opens in about 3 seconds...guns are secure till you need them.

Also have a Sentry Fireproof standing safe for other pistols and long guns. To counter the moisture problem, Browning makes a "Golden Rod" that is a heating element that attaches to the wall inside the safe and is treaded through a small hole to plug into the AC. Keeps the humitity down.

I THOUGHT the air in my Sentry firesafe felt moist!

Looks like a Stackon might be in the cards. Or the $500 sho-nuff Winchester full size safe from Costco.

Good thing I keep my pistols well oiled. The primary HD weapon is a stainless KP90 so I guess it can stay there...;)
