Objective answer...
Most people will just recommend their favorite gun and tell you why it is the best. The reality is that most "name brand" hand guns are made with a standard of quality that makes them all worth while purchases. Most will last longer than you and offer comparable reliability. A factor to consider is resale value vs original purchase price and the availability of parts and accessories.
A close friend of mine asked me the same question and I told him to go the gun shop and decide which felt better in his hand, a Glock or an XD. Both are reliable. Both are easy to use. Both have a bazillion manufacturers producing tons of upgrades, replacement parts, holsters, lasers, sights, ect.... and neither company is going anywhere any time soon. There is always someone out there wanting to buy a used Glock or XD as well, just in case you decide to move on to something else.
I love the Glock on paper. I love it's track record and how it meets all the requirements I mentioned above. With that said, I hate the way it feels in my hand. I wish I didn't, but I do.
However, I LOVE the way the XD feels in my hand. I prefer the 1911 style grip angle over the Glock's. Guess what...I own an XD. It does everything for me that a Glock could do AND it feels right in MY hand.
I say do the same thing I told my friend. Go to the shop and pick up guns. Find which one fits the most comfortably in YOUR hand with the PROPER hold and buy it. You can't go wrong with either a Glock or an XD 9.
