Handgun purchase with a twist?

I stopped at my LGS today to inform him I was coming in Saturday morning to do a 2 handgun transfer. {buying a S&W 5906 & 4506} :D

He told me there would be additional paperwork to fill out for the Feds, due to the multi handgun purchase. This is news to me! Of course I've never bought 2 handguns a the same time.
He said this would be faxed imediately to somewhere, maybe the ATF? I'm not crazy about the feds knowing my business.
It's not like I want to buy 20 automatic weapons. It's 2 pistols for crying out loud.
Does this put me on the "bad dude" list? Next thing you know they'll be reading my e-mail and tapping my phone for the sake of a couple guns.

The only thing I have had to do differently when buying a couple of handguns at one time is to include the county name of the city I was born in in addition to the regular paperwork. Not a big deal really. Your state may have some extra hoops to jump through. It shouldn't be too bad. After getting a CWP things seemed to get easier when buying a new pistol here and they didn't even have to make a phone call. They already did all the checking they needed to do and then some to get the permit.

I've bought more than one handgun twice and the salesman told me they had to do something called a "multiple handgun purchase" the second time. He also said if I waited 5 days they didn't have to do that.
Since then, if I find to that I can't live without, he holds it for me till the 5 days are up.
I will wait 5 days from now on.

My last purchase was two handguns, and nothing odd. I once bought a handgun and a rifle from two different stores at the same time. No problems. And I live in hellish Illinois when it comes to those things. Seems odd that you have to do additional paper work.

I would do it in 2 parts the the guy I'm buying them from is an hour away and is coming to my FFL for the transfer.
Disco,
This could be a royal PITA if they hold up my transaction for some reason. You must be on,"THE LIST".....

Im probably getting to the list.. if not already on it... They are probably wondering just what a person needs so many S&Ws for.:o

Ya will love the two ya gettin... have one of each already also.

Disco Racing, those things look beautiful! I've always loved the looks and features of the S&W autos, but I could never handle them comfortably. Love 'em!

The actual requirement is Federal (ATF) and it is for handguns only (currently). It states that if you purchase more than one handgun in a 5 buisness day period from the same dealer than the dealer must notify the ATF along with local and regional police.

It is the ATF's attempt at identifing straw purchasers. Your purchase should not draw extra attention. If you buy several of the same thing or multiple cheap guns you may get a visit. If you can show you still have them when they call it is not an issue. I have done it several times, not a problem so far. No ATF visits to date.

According to the GCA of 1968,

any multiple handgun salr of FIVE or more was to be flagged to the ATF clown.

Did somebody make a change to a Congressional passed law without going thru all the hoops?

Ask the dealer for current procedures, somethings fishy. (again)

Are you guys sure this is a federal law? I heard a rumor of such a law in border towns. I have bought multiple rifles in a day but not handguns.

If I bought 10 pistols and quickly resold them would I be breaking a law?

Probably.

If you bought 10 pistols from a single dealer in the space of 5 days or less you'd probably get to speak to a nice ATF agent who would want to know what you plan to do with all those pistols you bought for your own personal use. (Remember, you're not legally in the business of buying and selling guns for a profit or you'd have an FFL.) If, by the time he showed up, you couldn't produce any of the pistols that you bought, your life would suddenly become complicated.

The actual form is here [pdf]. If you buy two or more handguns from an FFL within a period of five business days, he must submit this form.

As SGHOTH said, they're looking for a pattern. It's unlikely that the OP's two Smiths are going to draw any attention. If he were buying two a week for several weeks running, they might.

The ATF is mainly looking for individuals who are purchasing large numbers of cheap guns.
