Tax time is giving me back a few bucks and I can buy a cheapo Hi-Point 45ACP pistol or a Ruger (probably) 10 22. I have neither and am wondering which to buy. I could spend more but I'm keeping SWMBO happy by only spending a small amount. Hence the Hi-Point.

Which one?

Update: Please vote with the assumption you don't have either one of these yet.

Just the fact that you described the Hi Point as "cheapo" makes me lean toward the 10/22. May as well get better quality if you are spending the money.
That being said, whatever makes you feel all happy inside is the better choice:D

Also consider a Henry lever action. Mine is absurdly fun, compared to pulling the trigger over and over. The racking action ups the fun factor.

Now here's a question for all those who voted for the 22lr... Do you ALREADY HAVE a handgun? I was thinking I needed something for home protection that was quicker to access then a rifle or shotgun and haven't owned a handgun in years.

Please vote under the assumption that you don't have either a handgun or 22lr. Thanks.

In that case, my answer would still be a 10/22 over a Hi-Point.

If you are serious about home protection in that price range, you should be looking at something like a used Mossberg (or new H&R) 12-gauge. You implied you already have a shotgun, so I would stick with that for HD.

I do not own a handgun, but I do have a .22lr. .22 may not be ideal for HD, but I would be willing to bet most intruders shot with a .22 will count themselves lucky for not being dead, and they will not stop to check the caliber before trying to get away. If you have other firearms, and I know you do from previous posts, you are probably covered for HD. Get the .22 - your house just isn't a home without one, IMO.

Hi-points are honestly good, reliable guns. But in the long run, id choose the 10/22. You can just do more with it.

Hi-Point Customer Service however is Second to none.. My buddy messed his 9mm up when disassembling and they sent him a new trigger and other internals, along with 2 extra mags for free. If only they were all that way.

Given the 2 choices I'd take the 10/22, however if I didn't own a handgun I'd likely look for one on the used market rather than buy a new Hi Point. The local Gander Mtn has a Makarov 9x18 for $199 and the Yugoslav M57 for around $250 (I've seen them on sale for $199). All in all I'd say buy whichever you feel you'd have more use for but if you go used you can get a bit better gun for less money. I'm sure if you shop around a bit you can find something you like since from the original post it doesn't sound like you're crazy about the Hi Point.

Stu

Yeah, the Ruger. If you need a HG for concealed carry the HiPoint is not going to help you much anyone unless you weigh over 500 pounds and can conceal it in the folds of your flesh. But if that were the case you could do that with the Ruger just as easily.

Totally surprised by this. Thanks a bunch guys. I guess I need to think about this more....

Remember, it is much more important to get what trips your trigger, regardless of what any of us say. It's not our money or our gun, after all.

Then again, I think you should get the .22... you know you want to... all the cool kids are getting them!:D:D:D

You shouldn't be too surprised. The Ruger 10/22 is a very well-regarded quality firearm. The Hi-Point... um.. less so.

If you really have your heart set on a good HD pistol, just save up another $100 or so and look for something like a used 3rd gen S&W or even a new Ruger P95. Either would be a vastly better choice than a Hi-Point.

I used to have a friend (now owns a sporting goods store) up north that lived next to in-laws in the country. When I'd go up we'd get together with .22's for a "match". He'd put out about 100 little rubber army soldiers (the kind we played with as kids) in the grass and I'd get my FIL's old Mossberg bolt action with a cheapo scope and he'd get his Ruger 10/22 and we have a contest as to who could hit the most army men. They'd be out to almost 75 yards. It was always close and we hardly missed. I have no one to shoot with anymore other then my brother up north. He's into handguns and that's why I'm considering one. Maybe I can talk him into a .22 rifle. That would solve the problem.

Or you could just get a .22 pistol
