handgun for hunting whitetail

Interesting how many - - -

- - -folks feel the need of the 300--325 gr loads at 1200-plus for whitetails. If the range is kept fairly close, a 255-gr LSWC at 800 to 900 is certainly plenty for even large whitetails. The higher velocity does indeed straighten out the trajectory, but I am not comfortable shooting a game animal much beyone 50 yards with an iron-sighted handgun. I feel the sportsman should have respect for the game. With a scoped handgun, of course, it is another matter, but this is not my particular area of interest. Like Mr. Pringle, I've taken several whitetails with a .45 ACP. Any game the 1911 or 1955 will take, a .45 Colt will do, too.

I do understand--If you're hunting in large bear or moose country, the local rules change a bit.;)

Best,
Johnny

Hey John the reason I gave all these stats is because Don(inquiring minds) wanted to know more about the 454 Casull, and yes you can kill any deer with a 45LC I'm not saying its obsolete either, of course preference is something everybody should have, My thoughts are with the 454 Casull I can load very hot load to take down anything in North America that walks on all fours or use moderate loads to hunt White tail deer etc..., you can even load 45 LC powder measures in 454 Casulls case if you want or just shoot 45LC, If I were to shoot 45LC I would just load to LC specs in a 454 case then your Coal would be on the money and the bullet of course would be closer to the forcingcone as well instead of being shorter in the chamber. I will tell you when I shoot LC then tern over to 454 Casull its like night and day, the 45LC feel like I'm shooting a capgun;)Like I said earlier its all preference, I'm just attracted to very powerful cartridges that hurt on both ends LOL. A old saying of mine is better to have it and not need it ,than to need it and not have it;) Just my thoughts. Aim small hit small. RAMbo.

Dongun,
You could always go for a Dan Wesson in 445 supermag. Or even the 414 supermag. In 445 you can shoot any .44 cal load and with the .445 you can get a compensated barrel that reduces felt recoil by as much as 60%. You'll find that the ballistics in .445 are as good or better than .454. Dan Wessons are extremely accurate and dependable. I have seen a ram silhouette target hit at 400 meters in Louisianna with a Dan Wesson.

I'm loading .44 Magnums with a 240 gr JHP over 21.2 gr Alliant 2400, OAL 1.610", Win. brass and primers. I zeroed the load in my Super Blackhawk Hunter and Browning Low Wall. It is very accurate in both firearms and they'll go to the field with me in late Nov. It's convenient to have both shooting the same load and either should suffice for whitetails in Louisiana. Both weapons will cloverleaf shots. The Low Wall at 100 yds. and the revolver at 75 yards, so I consider these two distances about the maximum I should take. With the thick brush, a longer shot just doesn't happen.

My 45 colt blackhawk has 3 critters to its credit

2 boar and a rambolette (sheep/ram hybrid) its been modified by adding a stainless steel grip frame, action tune abd jewling the hammer. nifty set of grips too.

The newest hunting blackhawk in my collection is

a 3 screw 41 magnum 6.5" barrel. It has been highly modified for my tastes. It has a steel grip frame and wide trigger from an old army revolver. The hammer has been replaced with an old model superblackhawk one (try findinf one of these) (The action is still the origiona;l configuration NOT the new transfer bar conversion of rugers)
custom oversized SS basepin in the Keith design. Fitted bullseye ejector rod. Last but not least a set of pachmayr presation grips.
real sweet gun.
