Handgun ammo shortage after the holidays

It could also be the normal end of year inventory taking. Its a lot easier to take inventory on a small batch than a huge batch. Same at the wholesale warehouses. So the stores wait till after the beginning of the year to restock.

Since i do the majority of my ammunition purchasing at gun shows, the prices have risen a bit, but the volume of sales has also increased. The amount of bulk ammunition going out the doors on handcarts is mind-boggling.

Checked wally world yesterday... They werent stocked to the brim as usual, but there was plenty of ammo to go around. Everything looked pretty normal actually:o

Strevieboy Hit the nail on the head

I think Stevie is dead on. This seams to happen every time a Democrat gets elected. At least the last 3 that were elected. Obama has way to many other problems right now to spend much time lobbying the hill on gun control.
If the economy does not rebound in the first 12 - 16 month of his office he will be a dead in the water president.
Metal prices have been falling steadily and from that stand point I would only manufacture the bare minimal until prices stabilized.
So all you dooms-day-ers say what you will, but look at the big picture with your own eyes and intelligence not what the media wants you to believe.
And as always Load-em and shoot-em!!!!

Wish this were the Case

So, my advice to all is to take a deep breath and not panic. And, my sense is that the panic buying will subside with the passage of time.

No evidence of sanity in West Knoxville. I stopped in Gander Mtn a couple weeks ago at opening time and there were 25 guys picking over what was left after all ready being picked over.

No, 30/30 (well it is hunting season). No handgun in common calibers, no decent quality .223 with the exception of two UMC "value paks".

I did get a couple boxes of Wolf .223 for plinking and a brick of .22.

Better shopping next time. I still need some Leverevolution 30/30, 300 Savage, and good quality .223.

Loading supplies are in similar short supply. Bass Pro on parts, some of the more common powders, primers are in short or backordered status.

I'm sure supply will catch up and demand will temper before long.

The price of metals has absolutely plummeted this year. I don't know how long it will take for ammo prices to reflect this fact, but I won't be buying anything except 22LR until we see 2006 prices again.

I was buying my ammo from Academe Sporting Goods here in Houston I was paying $82.00 for a box of 250 Remington UMC 45 cal. Now there $110.00 a box and are all ways out it seems like you have to wait at least 6 weeks before the get them in same with all there guns.
I am paying $24.00 a box at Walmart for 100 count of Winchester 45 that's 300 count for less than $75.00 cant beat that. This soon to be dictator Bamma is really going screw it all up I see us all dropping off are weapons to are government & standing inline to get a bowl of cold soup....................lol

May be Awhile

Despite the fact that metals prices have indeed come down substantially, the demand curve for ammo has risen.

Demand is driving the price right now. Better profit margins for the manufacturers, since material costs are down and prices have not come down and indeed demand is higher than ever.

It may take awhile before BHO fever subsides at the ammo stores and prices subside.
Until then, go without or stock up when you can find the right price and caliber.

Not Just The Holidays!

Don`t want to turn this thread into politcal football but IMO the holidays have had very little to do with shortages. Go back and check the currently shut down Legal and Political Forum. Fact is people are arming(and stockpiling ammo) at a big rate today. Have been since Election debates. More guns being sold=`s more ammo sold =`s higher supply and demand =`s higher prices and sometimes less ammo on shelf. Friend of mine owns small gun store. He`s limited( his customers) quantity of ammo you can buy over the counter. Simply because he doesn`t have the operating capital to invest in big quantities of different cals. of ammo. On the otherhand he`ll take orders(prepaid) and when he gets large order,( he has no problem getting ammo(to date). I put the 'to date' in there because he has had notifications from a few dist. in the past stating that 'due to high demand of some cals. , order may not be filled in full'. He hasn`t had a problem yet. Big buying surge started long before holidays;)

Can all this be due to the fact that retailers don't want to be holding a lot of stock they have to pay taxes on at this time of year?

Here in S.C. I have been noticing a shortage. I can't even find Federal bulk 22lr in any of the local Walmarts here. Much less 9mms', 45s' or anything else for that matter. I am glad that I reload and have plenty of componets.:D

You can scream about paranoia all you want but it doesn't change facts. Without getting political I can point to recent history.... During the Clinton years sales of many rifles and all high capacity magazines were banned. Was that recent history just paranoia? A return to a permanent ban is official policy as stated on the official Whitehouse.gov website... is that paranoia? Reid, Pelosi and Obama all have a history of a fanatical hatred of the 2nd Amendment and have a majority in both houses of congress... is that paranoia? If so I'll take paranoia over taking the official ostrich position. Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean somebody isn't out to get you. ;)

So yes as anybody that's been in a gun shop has probably noticed there has been a huge blip in firearm and ammunition sales. People are preparing for the worst including people that have no desire for a gun collection but don't want to be frozen out again like they were in the 90s - this time for life.

Add in the fact that the military has tied up a huge chunk of rifle and ammunition production capacity and you have a shortage. But making it worse are rumors that ATK has further restricted ammo sales to the public and you get panic buying and shortages.

Meijer's and Wal-Mart are both pretty low, but Dunhams and the local gun shops all seem like they have plenty available. Not sure if the big-boxes are putting a lot of effort into re-ordering stuff. I suspect that Meijer's is trying to get out of the gun stuff as I haven't seen rifles/shotguns there forever so I've been assuming they were going to start doing the same with ammo.

I did see Meijer's had a "Price Drop" sign on lots of their (out of stock) ammo. I guess that can be taken as a sign that things are coming around.

There is very solid basis for concern, and also for stocking up.
I posted this elsewhere, but will repost the gist of it here also.
All of you who are calling this an over reaction are certainly entitled to your opinion, but I must state that think you are being terribly naive.

Timoney said the homicides last year from assault weapons has jumped to 29 percent of all shooting fatalities. "These are weapons of war and they don't belong on the streets of Miami or any other street in America," said Miami Mayor Manny Diaz

If true, you just gotta wonder what all constitutes an 'assault weapon' under their definition.
That figure is seriously skewed somehow.

About a hundred green markers, indicating bullet shells, were scattered across Northwest 14th Avenue

. . yeah, no doubt this will be iron clad evidence of the 'urgent need' to limit magazine capacity.

According to detectives, a man with an AK-47 assault rifle fired several rounds, and then ran around a corner, continuing to fire. At the site around the corner, investigators said they found rounds from a second weapon. Police are trying to determine who fired the second weapon, and would not say what type of weapon it was.

And if this remains unsolved for any period of time, here lies the 'evidence' that we need to tack on the 'microstamping' provision so that all future shootings can be quickly traced back to the person who bought the ammo . . .

Everything is falling into place, and the needed situation has just been presented for Obama to take the one single action he has been groomed for from the start.
Count on it.
