I agree. There's an ammo shortage out there and gun prices sure haven't followed the general deflation that's hitting the rest of the economy. I think I know why.
I've been following these websites carefully since the election and there's a fair amount of "he's going to take away our guns/ammo" paranoia out there. I have friends who are convinced that it's just a matter of weeks before ammo sales are sharply restricted or before ammunition in certain calibers is banned altogether. One person told me with a straight face that he had it on good authority that reloading would be made illegal.
The fear is obviously having an effect. I went to a gun show in mid-November and the line to get in stretched out the door and down the block. I'd been to the same show many times and never saw half as many people there as on this occasion. When I got inside I discovered that the line at the ammo dealer's table was almost as long as the line to get in. I stood in that one for 1/2 hour and finally gave up. I've noticed also that Midway, my favorite internet ammo purveyor, has posted many "out of stock/backorder ok" labels for .38 special ammo, which is what I buy a lot of.
People ought to get a grip on themselves before they run screaming into the night. I have no idea what Obama's gun agenda will be. However, it seems to me that he has bigger fish to fry at the moment than worrying about gun controls. He's going to need all the support he can get on economic issues. I have my doubts that he's going to pick a fight over what is, for him, a secondary issue at best, and in the process gratuitously alienate a big chunk of the voters.
Nevertheless, he can't impose limits on ammunition sales or gun controls by executive order. He needs a majority in BOTH houses of Congress to enact meaningful controls. And, the likelihood of him getting that now is very small.
So, my advice to all is to take a deep breath and not panic. And, my sense is that the panic buying will subside with the passage of time.
