Hammer mounted firing pins?

The Model 586 went to a frame mounted firing pin in 1997 with the Model 586-6.
And then regular production ended in 1999, until the revolver was reintroduced in 2015 (IIRC) as part of the Classics line.

A handful of Performance Center and distributor-exclusive versions were made in the interim, but due to the 15-year production hiatus, the M586 is relatively uncommon with the frame-mounted firing pin, and 7-shot "Plus" versions are needles in the haystack. Almost all M586s are 6-shot with hammer-mounted firing pins.

All Smiths made after WWII have the current hammer block safety.
Actually, AFAIK the concealed-hammer J frame models (40/42/332/340/442/most 632/640/642) supposedly do not, although I've never personally taken one apart to verify this.

FWIW the shrouded-hammer J's (38/49/438/638/649) have them.

Here is a single action with a frame mounted firing pin. And not safe to carry loaded even though there is a spring holding the firing pin back.

My 640-1 and 640 Pro had them.
