Hammer fired pistol

If it is strictly target and range, a CZ 75 or 75 SP-01 is well worth handling. The SP-01 carries a little more forward weight, which helps some.

Any CZ 75 is a decent gun.

I am about the same age as you, I just bought a CZ SP01. Looked at SIG, Beretta, and Springfield as well as Canik. Finally settled on the CZ.

I am happy with my CZ75B - I don't like decockers I can let the hammer down on a loaded chamber safely myself. 46 years of carrying revolvers makes that almost second nature. The CZ fits a lot more like a revolver in my hand than other autos I have handled. While I am very happy with the CZ I won't carry an auto-loader for self defense and I bought it for the 3 gun games. I am getting close to a one inch group at 25 yards but the load needs just a bit more work. It shoots nicely with very little recoil - compared to my 357 magnums. If I ever quit 3 gun I would probably keep it. Its not a revolver but it seems dependable and well built.

Baldwin, for a 9mm target/range gun, if you're looking for something from a pure accuracy and shootability perspective, it's very hard to go wrong with a 1911 in 9mm. I have owned three, and my current one (a Dan Wesson Pointman 9) is the bee's knees. You don't have to go that expensive though. Pick up a Springfield Range Officer in 9mm, or if Ruger makes their adjustable sight 1911 in 9mm that would be worth checking out as well. As would the Sig 1911 in 9mm. Make sure you get adjustable sights.

A decent 1911 in 9mm will balance well, soak up recoil like no tomorrow, and shoot lights out compared to most other service autos.

The P226 is a good choice. But the grip is a little larger than other comparable 9mm hammer-fired handguns. Not sure if that makes a difference. I have the MK25 version and like it a lot.
Same for me...mastering the DA/SA mode of trigger manipulation has been an on-going trial...(old 1911 guy here). Accuracy and reliability have been superb...as is the quality. I don't care for the rails on a carry piece, (they can and do hang up on the leather holsters I've made...but work smoothly with Kydex).

Try the Beretta 92, and the FNX-9. There's a new boy on the block,
the Rex Zero 1S. Try to find some GEN 3 S&Ws, if you can.

Go to stores and see them all for yourself. Hold them. Shoot them (if possible to shoot/rent). I recently was looking for the same thing and spent a solid month going to like 10 stores, ranges, and a gun show. I ended up with the Beretta 92FS for a variety of personal preferences and am very happy with my choice. All of these are top notch guns so you aren't going to go wrong, just get the one that is best for you. As pretty much everyone else on this thread has said - they are all good choices.
