Hammer fired pistol

Even though I'm an older (mid 60s) guy, I am very new to handguns. My first two pistols are Glocks, which I like, but I want my next one to be a full size, hammer fired gun. It will be a 9mm and will not be a carry gun. I really like the Sig P226 and the CZ 75BD. I don't know which variant of the P226 I would get (there are too many choices). Would these two pistols be good options? Am I overlooking another brand/model? Thanks for any input.

Both good choices. You also have Beretta 92FS, 1911's chambered in 9mm. CZ would be my choice of the 2 you mentioned. That is just personal prefrence. Best thing to do is handle the firearms in the store and see which gun feels the most comfortable in your hand. Can you grip it properly, reach the trigger with your finger with comfort. Its all up to you as to what feels good/right in YOUR HAND. Don't let the sales person talk you into something. Guns are not like clothing, if it doesn't fit-feel good you cannot just take it back and exchange it of get a refund.

Dont forget the FNX-9 and the BHP, it will depend on what action your looking for. Going from a stryker fire system to either a single action (1911, BHP) or a DA/SA (FNX, Beretta 92fs, SiG 226) will help lower the choices.

The P226 is a good choice. But the grip is a little larger than other comparable 9mm hammer-fired handguns.

Not sure if that makes a difference.

I have the MK25 version and like it a lot.

Also check out the HK usp, p2000 and p30 series. They may or may not "float your boat". I personally like the ones that have a SA/DA ones with a safety/decocker lever. Local cabelas here has these in stock.

What is it to be for, if not to carry? You say:
"It will be a 9mm and will not be a carry gun. I really like the Sig P226 and the CZ 75BD."

Those are DA/SA pistols, which are one solution to safe simple readiness, good in a defensive weapon. Suitable for some competition like USPSA Production and IDPA SSP.
If for casual target shooting, you would probably bypass the DA and just load the gun and blast.

As said, the Beretta 92 is a good hammer fired 9mm.

"...be good options?..." Options for what? Big kid's toy? Sure. One is pretty much the same as another but it has to fit your hand.
"...Not sure if that makes a difference..." Absolutely. The fit to one's hand is essential. Doesn't matter if you're carrying it or not either. Go try 'em both on for size.

The 92's are GTG.. Beretta, Taurus, Check'em both out and see which one you like best.

Don't own a cz75's but everyone I've met with one seems to love'em.

Cougar 8000, Use to be built under Beretta but is not being made by their subsidiary Stoeger in Turkey, Nice gun can be found for 350ish range, little more compact then the 92's could actually make a decent carry gun.

Or it's successor the px4, poly frame this one.. I've seen some of these also in the 375 range lately.

Sig 228, no exp but it fits the bill.

The standard Sig 226 is my favorite traditional DA/SA pistol. The Beretta is a fine gun and if issued one would trust my life with it. But if it is my money I'll buy something else.

I've had CZ in the past and consider them the most over rated gun on the internet. When they were 1/2 the cost of top tier guns they were a decent value for the money, but at, or near the same price as a Sig or Beretta I'd pass.

For what you want to do a BHP would have to be a top contender too.

Both of those would be GREAT options. Also you might want to try a Beretta 92A1. I have one and let me tell you, it is SWEET. I LOVE full size metal frame DA/SA service pistols. Great for the range, open carry, or the nightstand.

It comes down to what you like in terms of trigger...and what fits your hands the best. All of the DA/SA triggers - and stryker guns - will move thru an arc - as they move on a pin. 1911's of course - move straight back and forth in the frame ( no pins). Obviously very different feel in terms of how they break, reset, length of pull, etc...

Nothing wrong with a Sig 226 ....but the DA/SA trigger is not my favorite in a gun. ( I have one in all stainless, DA/SA trigger..) good solid gun.

Like someone else said, don't overlook a good 1911 in 9mm...especially in a steel 5" gun. There are quite a few to choose from...Colt has a couple of models, Springfield has a few, Sig has a couple, etc -- or you can go clear up in quality to Wilson Combat ( CQB model is very popular )...but lots of options out there. Wilson Combat 9mm Protector model, 5" gun, all stainless is one of the finest guns I own.

Before you buy - rent or test fire as many as you can find.

All good choices. I'm liking my Sig 2022. Good double action trigger. Only thing is it has a lot of take up in single action. Takes a little to get used to. BTW, it's considered the poor mans 226. Very similar except it's a composite frame instead of alloy.

Good choices but I'll muddy the waters even further.

I was between the FNX and the PX4 storm for weeks. I eventually went with the FNX because it felt better in my hand but just two more reliable, well respected and similarly priced options!

I have the Beretta 92, the 1911 in 9mm, the Browning High Power, the CZ75, and a couple of others.

The CZ75 is easily my favorite. It's not even close.
