Had a Case-Head separation today

Additional information and backstory really can complicate things. Sometimes it takes getting flamed to remind oneself that improvement is still out there.

The "hundreds" of factory rounds I mentioned were all fired post-chamber recut. I did not reset the lock ring on the resizing die after the chamber was recut: quite candidly I was not much considering customized sizing, but rather a universal approach. Not so much as a conscious decision as something I really hadn't much considered. After I had a good quantity on hand that I was certain was fired in the "new" chamber, I had contemplated going back to neck sizing.

I will pull down the bullets and powder from the remaining 85, and toss the cases. For all of the cases I have that are known to have been fired in the re-cut chamber, I'll adjust the setting on my FL die, and resize them.

thanks for the replies. It's been very educational.

DING DING DING , there's the problem right there . You need to measure the fire formed cases from the newer cut chamber then adjust the FL sizing die to size your cases .002 shorter from head to datum point and all will be solved even for your Federal brass unless you are pushing really hot loads .

And then? I wonder. If that was true and all of that ammo fit the old long chamber why didn't you have trouble closing the bolt. I believe reloaders spend to much time talking about bump and not enough thinking about what actually happens.
