H and R 10 gauge...

Thought I would peek my head in here for some advice. I have a H and R 10 gauge that just sits in the safe. I picked it up with a bunch of others from a guy. Well, I have no use for it. It is in really great shape. Just one mark on the stock from another gun rubbing it. Any idea what I should ask for it? I like to shoot it but I have more "useful" shotguns.

Plus, there is a really nice rifle calling my name at the moment.

These sell around the south for 200 bucks new.
That reciever can be fitted to any rifle caliber by the factory.(i think)
Also a heavy 12 slug barrel.
Does it have a screw-in choke?
 
Are they both 10 ga?? Just noticed the top one has tan wood and a chopped off foregrip? Is it a 12? Is it a full choke? Is it also H & R?
 
The top one was a ham...always trying to get in the picture. Actually I think that one is a Sears and Roebuck:D It has a buldge in the last two inches of the barrel so it now hangs over my uncles loading bench.

It is on its way;) Actually, the kick is not bad. The gun is absolutely huge. It is so long and heavy that it helps tame the recoil. Full choke barrel...no tubes. Was going to use it for turkey this year.

I was thinking of putting it up on a local gunboard for $150. Sound fair? If I sell it I am dropping the rifle for now and buying my Dad his CCW class for Christmas.

If I NEEDED a ten I would trade a 1977 336 Marlin .30-30 for it but I can't part with my deer rifle for a novelty thunder pipe...:o:D One day I will own one but it will be make sweet love to a hack saw and get cut to legal and toted in a fringed leather holster:D

Oh Hell Brent, Why not go all out and spring for the tax stamp. I'm thinking 9 inch barrel with a "mare's leg" type stock left behind.

Buy some 10 ga slugs and make sure you post video :eek:. :D
 
turkey gun

I see one now and then as a turkey gun. Seems like they made one w/ a slightly shorter (26?) bbl as well. The ones I've handled are suprisingly heavy.
For less weight and more versatility, a 3" 12 ga w/ all the advantages of modern shotshells, probably offers as much killing power/ range as the old 10 ga lead loads, w/ less recoil and a lighter, repeating firearm.

Now, a 10 ga slug, that is interesting.........
 
I have an H&R model 147 10 gauge. I think it’s called a Sportsman long shot or something along that line. I would check but it’s buried at the very back of my gun safe at the moment. It has a 36 inch barrel and a full choke barrel with no choke tube. I used to use it for late season goose hunting when non toxic shot wasn’t required, and it was truly awesome for long shots on geese. I haven’t used it for a number of years, but have been thinking about getting some bismuth shot and reloading some of the hulls I have. It patterned beautifully with copper plated lead magnum BB shot, and I have been curious to see what it would do with a load of smaller shot for maybe turkey hunting. It’s a bit unwieldy due to the barrel length, but great for leading birds on the wing. Due to the weight it’s not all that bad for recoil either, but it is still a little stout. Anyone ever tried one of these on anything besides geese?
 
John, Here is the NEF info... I guess only rifle receivers can be fitted with shotgun barrels...
I may try to call them to determine if it is set in stone...

I happened have a 2009 H&R catalog and the receiver type for the 10 gauge, and a couple of the 12 gauge Ultra-Slug Hunters, is published as SB2 (as opposed to SB1 for the other shotguns). The SB2 code indicates the same higher grade receiver that the centerfire rifles have. However, that doesn't necessarily mean they will fit extra rifle barrels, or any other barrels for that matter, to the 10 gauge frame. It may have some dimensional differences that preclude H&R from doing that.
