Guns in the shower?

I usually keep my firearms pretty secure. If they are not on my person then they are either in the safe or in a hidden & locked strongbox located in the house for quick access. However, going away with the family for the week-end presents a slight problem especially since I have a little one who likes getting into things.

The time that gives me the most concern is when I'm taking a shower. So, to make sure that a firearm does not fall into the wrong hands, I've been bringing the gun(s) inside the bathroom when I shower. I lock the door and place the gun under a towel. Granted, I'm in there for only about 10-15 minutes but during that time, it does get pretty humid & streamy in there and I was wondering what effect this might have on the ammo?

I do the same thing. For different reasons ;) , haven't had any problems but I have thought about it.

Yes, there is the concern of corrosion, but more to the pistols than the ammo. The steam created by the shower will work its way into the pistol. Even stainless firearms aren't free of this curse, for example S&W stainless pistols will eventuall show slight rust marks on the slide and the aluminum frame will acquire light to dark gray blotches when exposed to extreme humidty and steam such as that of a shower (or living in humid climates). Make sure to take extra precautions such as applying a thin coat of grease to the outside of the firearm at least once a weak. Apply the grease and rub it away with a cloth, the firearm should be dry to the touch and not slick.

Of course, at the risk of sounding like an acolyte of a certain church, the easiest solution is to go polymer, nickel plated internal parts and Tenifer. This combination resists corrosion far better than other products. Humidity and steam will do nothing to it.

FUD, when I read your topic heading I thought you were going to discuss actually taking the gun in the shower with you.
Because of my job I used to actually do this. I kept a model 60 Smith in the soap tray in the shower. The gun was cleaned every week and shoot nearly every week so the ammo was "rotated". I never experienced any problems with the gun or the ammo.
I wouldn't worry about the ammo but I would clean the gun often....which I suspect you already do any way.

I never go into the bathroom without a weapon to fight my way back out.
Sounds a bit extreme, but I don't feel more vulnerable anywhere than in the bathroom. Musashi chose not to shower his whole life for a reason...

Think about the bathroom for a minute: You are alone, with no windows to escape, and ONE door. There is no phone. You are usually naked or your pants are around your ankes, highly defenseless. There are no escape routes, no communications out, and few, if any, improvised weapons available to you.
If some bad person catches you in the bathroom, opens the door and comes in to attack you, you have to go THROUGH them to get out. There is no escape but through the door he is blocking, and he is probably armed (with your own kitchen knife if nothing else). Think about the damage that could occur in that tight of a space if you are facing a violent person with a knife and no escape. You better be ready to fight.

There have been cases of bad guys "casing" a house and waiting until they hear the person in the shower before they break in.

You are standing naked in the shower on a slippery surface, you have soap in your eyes, and suddently the bathroom door is kicked in, and a murderer is standing there with a knife between you and your only route of escape. What are you going to do?

My solution comes from GLOCK. I carry it into the bathroom each and every time I go in. It goes into the shower often times, and gets soaking wet. Guess what....it is a GLOCK and it does not matter. I have been doing this for years and never had a rust problem, in fact sometimes I take an extra Glock in, and strip it and scrub it with soapy water while I shower. The ammo has never corroded or gone bad, although I do make attempts to keep it reasonably dry. The corrosion resistance of the Glock is one of the primary reasons that it is the gun that I always have on me.

This is a funny thread :). Yashure. CR, it IS my 'gun' and I'll wash it as fast as I want :) :).

Cassandra, just who have you p!ssed off so bad that you really need a gun in the can. I mean, if you really think you're going to fight your way out of the head, don't you really need some claymores in the hall, too? I don't think my wife would see the humor in that.

I mean, with all due respect to those who really are covert or work under cover, some of this seems a bit over the top to me, a dumb citizen, enjoying my morning constitutional, in my own home. Back to the original thread, tho, FUD, I appreciate your conscientiousness in keeping your gun secure on teh road with little ones about. The ziplock bag sounds like the trick to me. Ever'body stay safe, now. M2

you guys have slipped ove the freaking edge. i thought i was paranoid for packing two guns. no wonder i feel so much at home here.
as to the shower problem.. the zip lock bags work. a blue bag is even better.
and your right, claymores in the hall is a bit much.
any fool knows the claymores go on the driveway and beside the doors facing out.
you put gas canisters in the hall. who wants to have to replace all that drywall.

My God I'm glad I was never around him.

You can always use one of your wife's tupperware pieces. Just make sure you hear the patented burp. Also place claymores in front of all 1st floor windows.

FUD:

I enjoy your posts. I also commend your efforts to protect children. A trigger lock might be a useful solution.

If a person believes he is in so much personal danger that he needs to have a gun in the shower stall, he should also worry about poison gas coming through the shower head and what the squirrels in the yard are really up to.

If someone wants to kill you that badly, they can just blow up your entire house while you're in the shower with your clean gun.

Jeff

FUD -- My only question is, if you're going to keep one pistol under the towel ... where's your BACKUP? LOL!

no the bear traps go under the hall rug so they can not run when before gas goes off. LOL

oh yeah that super soaker becomes a weapon with household ammonia inside
