Gun shop sells out of Mini-14s after terrorist attacks--but why Minis?

....and those that *need* to spend $3,000 to "trick out" something that was never intended to be accurate, and never stood the test of the battleground (geeze, a speck of dust, or worse yet, a grain of sand....) & yer field stripping. Kinda the same deal with the 1911, but I don't like to go there ;)

I wasn't bragging about hitting the steel ram at 200 meters. I was just stating that the rifle is much more capable than most give it credit for. Someone made the statement that they don't count on theirs beyond just 50 yards! Why not just use a shotgun then?

Hitting that ram at 200 meters OFFHAND is about all most guys could do with their more accurate AR's as well. I know that I can't consistantly hit it with my iron-sighted AR.

The point is, shoot what you like. I can't understand why some people have to look at others's firearm choices with such disdain. Does it really bother you that some else buys a mini? If it does, you need to get a life!

Maybe because the don't know what an FAL is?

All kidding aside, I agree with the majority of the above. Cheap, shoots common rounds, good for urban situations (.223 won't go through as many walls as a .308), easy for the uninitiated to understand, common and inexpensive normal capacity magazines, not as "evil" looking as an AR so won't upset the local PTA as much, blah blah blah. The A-Team thing might be a factor, actually! Heh.

How do you protect yourself from a maliciously steered 767 with a rifle?
Well, sad to say, I'm shopping for a rifle for the same reason I carry a handgun, protection from my fellow Americans. Worst case, as I see it, is that another terrorist attack wipes out or overwhelms the gov't, leading to widespread panic and rioting in the streets. I want more than a 9mm if I have to fight my way out of the city.
I think people just need excuses to buy guns.
Exactly. :D

Hey Gob..

Someone made the statement that they don't count on theirs beyond just 50 yards!

*ahem* That would be me. Of course, I'm certain the carbine is capable of better than that -- but that's simply not what I got it for. Heck, FOR MY PURPOSES, I've started to fold the rear sight out of the way entirely, and use the little button on the handguard as a crude rear open sight until such time as I get a red dot for it. Obviously it ain't a .5 MOA sighting system, but for what I want it to do, it works.

I didn't mean to insult you, or how you use your rifle. Personally, I love the Mini, just like I love the M14. I think more than anything, this is kinda like different cooks trying to work in the same kitchen. You leave the Mini in the rifle drawer. I leave it in the "kick-ass up close" drawer... 'cause like I said in another thread..

I suck with a shotgun. :D

I'll tell you why I'm buying a Mini-14...

Because I live in California and I have virtually no other choice for a .223 semi-automatic rifle.

As far as the timing, it is purely coincidental. I had already committed myself to purchasing a rifle prior to 11 Sep.

However, I would suggest one good reason for going out and buying more firearms (and it is not because I think we'll be battling terrorists in the streets): the increasing threat to your Constitutional freedoms from within. That is, the leftists and big-government-elitists will use this recent tragedy to attempt to further strip us of our liberties. And of course, gun control is always the flagship of their agenda.

So I would urge you to take this opportunity to exercise your RKBA...while you still can.

I really on my Mini-14 as my only rifle carbine.
My reasons:

1)I hate the direct gas system, T charging handle, and stock length of the M16.

2)MOA doesn't concern me in the slightest.

3)The Mini is SO much easier to fieldstrip.

4)The Buttler Creek folding stock makes it very handy.

5)The Mini laughs at dirt.

I have both and enjoy shooting both immensly. They are different guns for different purposes and I wonder if anyone who complains about mini accuracy would care to stand down range from one. Heck, they ain't all that accurate so you shouldn't have anything to worry about. :D

1.) Shoots .223

2.) Costs half of what an AR-15 does

3.) Doesn't look "evil"

If I were a salesman (which I am, but not in a gun shop anymore), those are the points I would be using. And I think that for the uninitiated consumer they would be more than enough.

If anyone thinks a Mini 14 isn't any good past 50yds just try and stand 400yds away from me and I'll give you a lesson:p

The Mini 14 is no longer the poor man's assault rifle. I just got back from my Local Gunshop and the new SS Ranch Models go for $500 now. The SAR's are the best Y2K survival guns:eek: But nobody needed a gun for Y2K;)

The President has said that we need to get back to "normal" and help the economy. I can think if no better way than to go out and purchase a Mini or whatever other toy for that reason alone. Not for Afghan hordes, just for the fun of it and protection in general. Hopefully, some of the "sheep" will see what they have been missing for all these years.
