Gun Safety but still at reach

I am going to be buying a new pistol soon,my first one.My question is what is the best way to store your handgun safely but still in arms reach. My idea is to buy a digital recessed wall safe that opens out and install it in my closet that is 3 feet away from my bed..When i am sleeping i will keep the safe open and when i go to work i will lock the safe so when im gone it is safe from burgulars and children which i dont have at the time.I saw a safe that was around $60.00 at amazon. But anyways any suggestions would be gladly taken in.

I may get flamed for saying this, but I simply slip a revolver under the pillow at night. Now that being said, I sleep alone in a queen-size bed and the gun is under the pillow that my head is not on. I don't have to worry too much about someone else getting ahold of it as the youngest person in the house is 14 and she knows to leave it alone, likewise the gun is moved to a more secure location in the morning.

safes are good, mine sits at my bedside table w/ a spare mag.

then 3 steps away left is my cx4 w/ light. 3 steps away right is my mossy 500.

I like the digital safe idea, kept close to the bed, with a short (3 digit) code that you've memorized forwards and backwards. Incidently, I've heard of individuals who were in highly stressful situations become unable to dial 911. They knew the number, but their fingers couldn't figure out how to push the buttons. If you go with a safe, you need to practice punching in the code.

i was going with the digital safe but it would stay open at night and in the morning it gets locked up.Second i share a queen sized bed with my wife and i dont think that would work out too well with her. My grandfather sleeps with his gun too but he sleeps alone.I do have a nightstand next to me and has a drawer that i could put like a slip lock no combos or keys needed.Just a homemade lock drawer and in the morning i would transfer it to a secure place.

If you don't have strangers or children in the house, don't worry about it. I do NOT recommend the "pillow that you dream on" method. I have my HD gun in a strap holster fastened upside down to the head of the bed. One flick of the snap and the gun drops into my hand.

If you don't carry your HD weapon, then a gun safe is a good idea for when you're away.

My bureau drawer special stays in the bureau drawer; right under my eyeglasses and a flashlight. But then I have no children or one-night-stand lovers poking around, either.

I have something similar to the gunvault which is bolted to my bedframe and holds the "in house" gun, a Surefire flashlight, and a bag of marbles (which I would spill down the long hallway to confuse things if necessary and no I'm not kidding). When I go to bed I open the safe and leave it open so that if needed I can directly access the contents.

When I'm up and about the safe is closed and locked.

This has been a good, workable, compromise between personal security and household safety.

(Disclaimer: No kids in the house though)

Love the marble idea:) but my long hallway is carpeted. :(
I have a fingerprint-identify handgun safe right next to the bed programmed for both mine and wife's fingerprints. No combination recall required.

I keep mine under my bed in a holster but not in a safe. My bedroom door is right next to my front door (maybe 8ft) so I opted to not have a safe so i could get to it very quickly. (I do have a safe for when we are out of town)

There is a skirt around the bed (wife's choice of course) so the gun isn't visible.

I have actually heard a nightstand is a bad place because if someone comes in and you dont wake up that is the first place they'll look.

Under the pillow would scare the crap out of me incase you were to accidentally discharge the weapon in your sleep, but I guess it depends on the gun. My HD is a Glock 19, so no external safety and I keep a round in the chamber.

A gun vault or small lock box. I have been looking for one with a finger print reader built in. IF anyone knows of on please post a link.

right this second

"Unsafed" guns: The one in my pocket, the two within arm's reach, the two more within three long steps, and two more upstairs.

My kid knows better.....

I keep mine in a quick-access digital-combo safe in my bedroom closet. I just have to jump out of bed, take 2 steps, punch in the combo, and I have my firearm at the ready (well, right now they're two in there.) My long guns and other handguns are locked in my main safes.

I have a 2 tier coffee table and I keep mine on the lower level under a magazine(an ESPN magazine) while I'm sitting on the couch. And when I go to bed, it's on the table next to me. I do not do this when I have poeple over though.

i am going out tonight to buy a bag of marbles.I think i am a little paronied.I have 4 cameras getting all angles of my house in back and front that record whenever they see motion. Then i got a shotgun upstairs in my attic also known as my panic room which has a phone and a get away. Also i got slomins security motions and all doors and windows.Funny thing is i live in a very nice part of queens NY.Then if i need to leave the house quickly i have my 2 Go bags in my closet for my wife, dog and I.I always have at least 3/4 gas in my suv.Guess im ready for bandits or zombies.

I have a SentrySafe with a 4 digit combination programmed into the touch pad. It is in my closet and I have timed myself several times and once I step out of bed I can have my 9mm Stoeger Cougar out and a round racked into the chamber in less than 10 seconds.
I am a very light sleeper and I hear vehicles when they stop in front of my rural house. So I figure if someone stepped onto my porch or the back steps I would hear them well before they broke in. I think it is best to have the handgun locked up and with a loaded magazine in but nothing in the chamber, think you really need a few seconds to wake up in order to make the right decision in and emergency situation. Besides, my daughter probably would never let our granddaughter visit if I left a gun hanging on the bedpost!
