gun safe in garage

No safe is impervious to theft, given enough motivation and time by the thief. To me it seems that putting the safe in the garage just makes it a bit easier for the thief who can back his truck right up the safe and haul it away.

Mine's in the garage.
I don't worry about humidity much, though, since I'm in Colorado.
I keep an old yellow bed sheet over it (which blends into the background paint, by happy accident) and I generally don't open the safe while the garage door is up.

If someone breaks into my garage, they are going to steal the bikes and ski gear first--easy to move and sell.

Well i put it in a closet we did not use much its on the ground floor so its on a concreat slab with 4 3inch bolts so its not going anywhere.

My uncle in Atlanta has had his safe in the garage for past 25+ years.

He can't get it into his house because the safe is too large and heavy... holds about 50 rifles/shotguns plus couple shelf to hold handguns/jewelery and documents. He has three or four Golden Rods plus a string of led lights in it to control humidity and never had problems with rust.

He built a fake wall and put cabinet doors on it to hide the safe. The garge has an alarm system plus a separate alarm system for the safe.

I would bet that in most cases, if a truck and a group of guys capable of loading a full gun safe show up at your garage door, they already know you have a safe and that's what they're after. No amount of camo (fake cabinets, etc.) will help, they know it's there and they will find it.

I remember hearing of a fellow who had a huge safe in his basement. As I recall, it took 4-5 of his buddies to help him get it down the flight of stairs (empty of course). Unfortunately, he loved to brag about all of his firearms and how costly they were. Apparently, after returning from work one evening, he found that his safe, which had been filled with firearms was gone. This meant that the thieves carried it all the way back up the basement steps. He said that there wasn't even a nick in the paint of the walls along the stairs. It was as if no one had even been there. Nice that the thieves were considerate about that!

In my opinion, if you have no alternative, then the garage should be fine. Be aware of humidity and temperature concerns. In many cases (no pun intended), a dehumidifier rod or two will keep the humidity down and the temperature up enough to keep your firearms happy. Firearms do not have to be as warm as humans to be happy, just as long as the humidity is controlled.

I would always place it in a climate-controlled environment unless it's impossible.

Maybe if it were pretty well sealed (airtight) with a gasketed door, and one of those dehumidifying canisters in it , would be OK.

Just seeing the surface rust on tools, etc. that are in my garage workshop is enough for me to know it's not an ideal environment.

When I lived in nv, the garage was the location for the safe, with the low humidity, I NEVER had any issues. Now here in FL, it sits inside under heat and air

No Problem here.

I have a small (10 gun ) in the garage and the larger (20 gun) in the master bedroom closet. One in the garage keeps what I "tinker" on handy & the larger one houses my shooters. Oh, and I have some very alert, and well armed, neighbors.
