gun safe in garage

Depends on if you have a heated garage and how close it is to where you want it! I have my safe( small 16 rifle safe) in my bedroom and it hasn't fallen threw the floor yet!(weighs about 400 lbs) I have a newer, well built home and its in a corner, bolted to the floor.

its not heated but it does not drop below 58 in it and i have a alarm on the house and garage.Just do not where to put it in the house and i spend a lot of time in the garage

Not sure where your located but if its in a humid climate I'd be afraid to locate the gun safe in the garage. If your in the desert I'd go for it, as long as its bolted down (plan to do the same at our AZ winter home).

+1 to many toys when in Az. stuffs in vaults in garage plus my father has kept his 2 safes in the garage in phoenix for 18 years without any problems.

Mine's in the garage, out of necessity.

I keep a 7w night light burning in it and I've been told that will keep the temp and humidity in a decent range.

I hope that's right. I've not had any problems so far.

I'm always willing to learn, however, that's what I do here.

Best,

Will

I have a 1000 pound safe on the main level of my house. No weight issues at all- I have it next to an exterior wall, so it has support from the foundation there.

If I were placing a gun safe in the garage, I'd pay more attention to the in-safe climate, but that's hardly a problem. There's a bunch of people who have safes out there due to size/weight/room concerns, and it works fine.

Here in Missouri we have some pretty extreme temp shifts and humidity can be bad.

I have one safe left in the garage. Bolted to the floor and two exterior walls. Before I put a light bulb in it, it was pretty bad as far a humidity and rust. I run a 15 watt incandescent bulb in it now and have no problems with it.

Control the humidity and secure it to the building and you should be good to go.

(Do not use a fluorescent bulb, they do not produce enough heat to keep the small space dry.)

I don't like the gun safes in garages for the following reasons:

1. Moisture - garages usually aren't climate controlled and moisture tends to be a bigger issue.

2. Too Easy to cut aluminum garage doors, break in, drive a truck up to your safe and yank it out.

3. Safes are generally too visible in garages. I like safes to be tucked away in closets inside of the home.

A friend of mine has a few gun safes in his garage. He build cabinetry around them, you wouldn't know a gun safe was there without opening the cabinets up. To the casual observer it just looks like a place where any sort of tools or hardware might be stored.

+1 Skans, and I'll add one more:

4. Burglars love stealing tools because they're almost impossible to trace and are therefore easily fenced. Consequently, garage burglaries are more common than many people think. Why give the BGs an additional target?

Mines in the garage, heated in the winter to around 50F. Has a dehumidification unit in it. I just need to remember to put it in the oven every couple months. I do not have ant rust problems. My FIL has one in a room in his heated barn, no problems there either.

Mine's in the garage out of necessity. Getting it into the basement would have been nearly impossible without destroying a few things.

I was just wondering how many people have safes in the garage and do u think it is a good idea.

No, my gun safe is in my bedroom

No, unless it HAS TO BE there, I would never do it.

In my bedroom, I can keep a closer eye on it, . . . have access to it's contents if stuff goes south, . . . and know it is "safer" for it in my house than it would be in the garage.

YMMV

May God bless,
Dwight

At the old house, the safe sat quite nicely in a bedroom closet. New house, it's sitting in it's own room on concrete slab, over carpet/pad, with steel door to the room. I've converted the garage into a library and used some of the room on the other side of the wall for a safe room. Last four years, the safe sat in the garage, on slab, with some hardwood flooring bits between the steel and the concrete, no issues. I was not pleased when the neighbor across the street remarked about what a big gun safe I had, it was partly visible when the door was up. Now it's invisible, in a double locked room.

Mine weighs around 400lbs as well and it is in my bedroom for easy access if needed. So far I haven't experience any weight issue yet. My garage is a detached one therefore even if weight was an issue I wouldn't have kept it in there anyway. It is easy to break into garages and very difficult to hear the commotion if it is quite a distance away.

Is your garage attached or detached to the house?

It is attached but i think it might be going in my den still not for sure. The den is on a slab just like the garage. Bedroom is imposable, split level house
