Gun-rights groups gang up on NRA

I am supremely pissed about the NRA and their concessions to the antis BUT I don't think that airing our dirty laundry in public is helping our cause at all.

We do need to defeat gore. We need someone who at the least doesn't use the BoR as toilet paper like the current admin in DC. We must hold what we have until we get the reinforcements to take back lost ground. All of this grandstanding about not one inch and no comprimise will get us nowhere unless we have all three of the branches of federal government not commitewd to destroying our rights.

As much as it galls me to do it, I am supporting the NRA publicly while I warm the phone, fax and e-mail lines to their HQ with my complaints privately.

Dennis - you continually used compromise as a dirty word in an attempt to persuade folk.
I have argued that strategy is not compromise. You always ignore that.

I said quote;
They would have deprived me, my friends and many law abiding citizen of the opportunity to legally
carry.

I said "opportunity" very deliberately. This was to avoid the "rights" issue. Gaining the opportunity was more important than another hissy fit on the GOA's part.

The GOA because of their position would not accept the CHL bill as a good thing. They
ACTIVELY opposed it.

The only real progress we have made recently are the shall issue bills. Lott and Kleck make the case that guns are legitimate for us to have.

So - to cut to the quick, the GOA would rather rant and rave and have no shall - issue law. Thus, every women who would have legally carried would not have been able to .

It is nice for armchair commandos to tell people to break the law by carrying illegally. I would rather a women working late carry legally than listen to folks shout
"Enough". Maybe you don't get it but every CHL or CCW permit holder is a statement for the RKBA and these people will fight for the right to keep that gun if it is taken away.
If they never carry because of the GOA's idiocy, they will not be committed to the RKBA. That is a behaviorial strategy that makes tons of sense. It is better than "Enough". In fact, who gives a crap if you say "Enough". If that's all you do, you lose in the legislature, in the wars of public opinion and the courts.

Do you think anyone outside of the choir gives a crap about Charlton Heston talking about the 2nd Amend. Think outside of the box.

Would these folks be better served by the GOA or would the various compromises that went into the TX chl bill serve them better.

I have laid out what I think are strategic and tactical ways to advance the RKBA that are not just sitting there with the choir and fighting defensive battles.

Just saying "Enough" is meaningless. We are loosing ground if you listen to folk outside the choir.

The GOP is seen as our legislative ally but isn't. The culture moves away and all some of you can do is yell "Enough" and fight temporary holding actions.

Losing strategy and just a feel good procedure for increasingly bitter old men.

Just a note for some of you here.

The argument about project Exile isn't just about gun control,'68 or otherwise. It is also about federal role in law enforcement. The current Supreme Court is the one that has just stricken down laws, such as the one about guns in school, and the provisions of the Brady bill that mandated that state governments run checks, and might soon strike down a federal arson law. The NRA is coming off as really strange to the educated when it is telling the Administration that it should ignore the Supreme Court and enforce the laws anyway.

This is dangerous, dangerous, and might get us stuck with bad long-term policy. That is why I've got to disagree with Jim March, who I normally agree with.

The NRA should be able to critique the Administration on enforcement issues without blatantly advocating a breech of the constitution.

Tis like a bunch of old ladies fighting over who has the prettiest blue hair-doo.

When one examines the results of the NRA's involvement in the battle over our 2nd Amendment, one can only conclude that they have been utterly stupid or covertly corrupted. It is obvious that the GOA, JPFO, SAF, and others on the fringes of this battle, recognize this as well. I suggest that the NRA has played the politics of a loser. They've entered a debate in which their adversary has nothing to lose, nothing to compromise, and everything to gain. They no longer stand on principle. And this is dangerous for gun owners. And it is more than likely, that they have been manipulated from within, with the sole objective of controlling the outcome of the debate. Just look at the results, it is undeniable.

NRA should stay focused on gun safety education, but should move over and let "no compromise" lobbyists take over the job of defending liberty. We can no longer afford to lose any more ground. What was once viewed as a slippery slope, is now being viewed as a dangerous cliff. We can either stand firm on Constitution principles, seek to repeal ALL gun control laws, and return the government to the people, or we can fall the distance of the cliff into the sea of enslavement, faced with repeated twenty foot waves of ice cold turmoil crashing down upon us, swallowed up by the abyss of tyranny.

I'll choose FREEDOM anyday.

P.S.: And for you George W. Bush fans...he is no more a savior of the 2nd Amendment freedoms than Charles Schumer, he'll just not be so damn obvious about it. WAKE UP!

I don't think anyone's ever said that George W. is a "savior" of the 2nd. But he's not an enemy of the 2nd, as is Al Gore, who now looks to be as anti as Schumer. One of two men is going to occupy the Oval Office next January, and they will appoint Supremes who will decide our fate. Our only chance to roll back the gun laws is through a favorable ruling on the 2nd by the SC. And that ain't gonna happen if Gore's in office.

The NRA is what we as members make it. It's the 4th most powerful lobby in Washington.
It would be the first most powerful if the other 77 million gun owners got off their duffs.

Our only real hope for the future, I'm afraid...
