After reading all the posts which mention the price of guns...I have to come to one conculsion..West Texas must be the most expensive place on the planet to purchase Handguns...I have never seen a gun in this part of the world priced anywhere near what you guys pay for yours...I think I need to move .

Getting Good Prices on Guns

My limited experience suggests that you usually cannot get the best prices in gun shops or sporting goods stores. Thjose who are willing to pay premium prices at their local, friendly gun shop naturally have a right to do so. These retailers tend to sell at the listed or suggested retail prices, while much lower prices are available at gun shows or by having guns specially ordered.

Even at the gun shows there can be amazing variations in price from dealer to dealer. There is one dealer in my area who has had very low prices for Rugers, for example. I have seen a Glock 21 at a gun show here for $500. But I know that even better prices are charged at other places in the country. I think I have seen some very low prices on certain firearms reported even in Texas.

I have had good luck by searching on the Internet for distributors who have good prices or supplies of guns not usually seen in my area, and having a storefront dealer or a kitchen table dealer order it for me.

I hate movin'. I DO like bein' there (wherever I'm goin'); but I hate movin'.
Just work a little harder for a lower price; it'll be cheaper than movin'.

I think too, it makes a difference on what brand you're buyin' where. I've been able to get some better than average deal on Walthers and Kahrs here in Oklahoma. Even my AR15 wasn't too bad, but some others seem to run a bit higher. Marlins and Rugers here seem higher than other places. Last time I checked a Glock it too seemed high. I have noticed lately that prices seem to fluctuate quite a bit from time to time. Even at the same shop. I've seen as much as a hundred and fifty dollars difference on basically the same gun, in the same shop, in a 3 or 4 week period.

Just have to keep shopin' and huntin'.

Visit sportingarms.com. It's an online dealership that a guy in Lewisville operates from his house. He can get just about any make and model you'd want, and his prices usually match or beat the best store prices I've found in Dallas.

Then all you'd have to do is find an FFL dealer in your area who'd receive the gun for you, usually for a fee of $15-$20.

If you ever visit the Dallas-Fort Worth area, try to catch a gun show, or go to Bachman Guns in Dallas. They (and sportingarms.com) have the best prices I've found.

Good luck.

glh,

As a Dallas area resident who took a trip with the spousal unit to Amarillo this year... I gotta say you're right.

After sneaking away from the Hotel one morning, I visited a couple of local shops... Man!

There was more than one reason, I was glad to get back home.

My mom's home town is Del Rio----every time I went into the True Value down there-- I almost choked when I saw the prices. So yes--from my experince the prices are very high in West Texas.

My Buddy has an FFL so I only pay Dealer cost for anything I purchase. That is nice, really nice. I buy him a 12 pack of Coors light every now and again for his services.

I live in Amarillo, and agree that guns are priced pretty high here. In both of the major stores, I've found that if you let them know that you've done your homework, they are willing to come off substantially (usually within $20 or $30 of the going rate).

I've ordered several guns by mail, and have used the dealer Curley recommended - Sporting Arms. They really do have great prices and you will not find a better person to deal with. Tom Harris will bend over backwards to make you a satisfied customer.
The only problem with Sporting Arms, is that they are in Texas. Since I also live in Texas, I have to pay sales tax, plus shipping. Even so, if I can't make the right deal locally on my next purchase, I'll still probably go with Tom, since he was such a pleasure to deal with.

I've also had good success at the guns shows. Once again, just do your homework before you go. You can cut through the bull pretty quick when you know what a gun is really worth.

PROFIT IS NOT A DIRTY WORD -- PLUS I'VE MADE A FRIEND

I've gladly paid more at my local gunshop to maintain a relationship that gives us both extra; he gets a decent but not exorbitant profit, and I can get a most-recent-manufacture model (ordered for me) that might otherwise be unobtainable.

Then when I've needed to buy on the 'net he doesn't charge me much for handling the transaction.

You should see the prices out here in Kalifornia. Sure, there's the occasional sale, but barring that, the prices out here are insane.

Thanks

Thanks for all the comments...I was only about half serious when I started this thread...I really would not move for the price of a gun (I do have a life)...this was directed to the lucky folks that are able to get an as new Sig P226 with two hi caps for 400.00, an as new in box Colt series 70 for 350.00 and such as a Mark 23 Socom for 800.00..that I am reading about.

Gary

We have a fine gun shop here in Midland..just we do not have many used P210s for 750.00 or many Colt det specials as new for 295.00 and so on and so on. I read the other day that someone was told they paid too much when they paid 400.00 for a Kimber Full size.

Glh;
As a side note; I live in Austin(San Francisco east) and it seems otherwise cost of living in
Midland is much cheaper.

glh, the prices at the Odessa gun show have always seemed reasonable. Varies from dealer to dealer, of course.

Bullet44, you couldn't get me to move back to Austintatious on a bet! Even McBride's seems to offer less of a discount than they used to. (Though, as example, Joe told me he only has 15% profit margin on his Remington rifles...) Even I can't get much of a brother-in-law deal there, and I've bought stuff from them since 1964 when Jack was in the old wooden house!

Feel sorry for the folks in Alpine, though. The TrueValue store is the only game in town for new stuff, and I think they're above retail! (Well, it might be sticker shock...)

Colorado is not too bad but I want to make a trip out to W. Africa. I would love to get one of those deals you hear about on the news where weapons are so plentiful you can get 6 AKs and an RPG for a McDonald's extra value meal and 2 chickens.

On a more serious note I've also had superb luck just sticking with one small local dealer and staying loyal to him. I've occasionaly paid $10-20 more than I would on-line or at a gun show but I've more than made up for it with the constant stream of good guy/good customer discounts that I've gotten over the years. Especially on mags and accessories- there are so many little purchases invovled that 5 bucks here and there adds up fast.

Bullet44 and Art Eatman,

The best places in Austin are Hertitage Firearms and Cost + 10%, McBrides in much higher on almost everything. Cost + 10% has some amazing prices on some items. They have a small stock but can order for you. I've bought several guns at both places. Of course, we have a gun show once a month also & you can find a few good deals there too.
GLH - next time you're flying or driving to Austin, Dallas or Houston, you might pick up a gun there while you're at it. You can check your gun in your baggage flying back.
