My wife and I are considering homeschooling when our 6 month old is ready. She's an Elementary teacher, and I'm an aspiring H.S. Gov. and Hist. teacher. There's a lot of truth to the statement made by Equalizer. I don't want my kids to model behavior of their classmates, I want them to model adult behavior. There is a philosophy of parenting that is prevalent lately, that your kids "hatch" when they turn 18. This is to say that your kids can act any-which-way, and when they turn eighteen, they'll automatically behave as an adult. It's a liberal thing and I don't understand it, but they still think of a 17 year old as a "child" when it comes to behavior. I joined the Army at 17! Anyway, In Texas, the entire school system is becomming a test-driven system. One test. It evaluates students, teachers, schools, school-districts, and entire populations. It's called TAAS, and it is the single most stupid thing ever perpetrated on the taxpayers. The idea of making schools more accountable is a laudable one, but the government has it backwards. Schools aren't accountable to government, they are accountable to posterity (kids, grandkids and so-on). There is a great organization for all you parents who can't homeschool, but would like the untaught lessons to be taught. It's called 4H. The kids (male and female) are taught shooting skills, community service, agriculture projects (raising somthing), and other valuable life skills. Look into it. I rate it higher than boy-scouts, and much, much higher than girl scouts. It's just another tool.
