Gun owners: time to go on the offensive!

Good point,
Even if the principal at Columbine had to get his gun from a safe and load it (which is a bad idea, should have it with him), he could have saved a dozen kids. The teachers and administrators knew there was a rampage going on(because of the gun shots) but could do nothing to stop them. If a few had guns then the killing wouldn't have been so bad. They don't have to search the halls like a SWAT team looking for the killers but some of them that were protecting the kids in the library would have stopped them when they showed up.

Amen! As in sports, the best defense is a good offense! Sick em, boys - send those letters to your local paper. It's about time we had a major offensive campaign rather than a retreat.

Missing the Point...

what compelled this kid to kill?

Redhawk41 is the only one to ask the real question, and he's right--the issue is not guns, but why do kids do this? And why now?

Is it because of the availability of guns? I doubt it. School shootings are a recent thing. I don't remember hearing about any prior to the last decade or two (anyone have statistics?).

Decades ago, guns were much more freely available than they are now. Back then, you could buy guns from any hardware store, large department store, and even mailorder with no background check and no questions asked. Parents who owned guns didn't have gun safes to keep their guns away from their kids; heck, many of the kids owned their own guns.

My father used to take his .22 to school with him and store it in the coat room so he could hunt squirrels on the way home. This was considered a normal thing back when he was growing up in the 1940s. Now a kid can be suspended for bringing a picture of a gun to school.

So why weren't there school shootings decades ago? What drives kids to kill now? I don't have the answers to these questions, but I think a discussion of this question is more relevant than one of simply banning guns or arming teachers.
