If you really want to look at it from a historical persective, it would have to be the 98 Mauser. After all the '98 was the principle arm for ALOT of the combatants for 2 world wars. Not to mention the single greatest influence on future sporting rifle designs for the rest of the century[Win M70, Rem 700, Ruger 77, etc,etc].
