Gun Holsters

Welcome back Alex, 2/25/11

Back to your original questions. I have tried holsters in leather, kydex and nylon, both IWB and OWB. I prefer a leather IWB as the most comfortable and concealable for me (height 6-0, wt. 170 lbs).

Keep up the good postings.

Changing your original post was a mistake. It would have been a better idea to use this thread to continue your long form essay while starting a new thread to discuss the relative merits of different types of holsters.

Paddle Holster- For smaller firearms they are fine. They offer better concealment in some cases. If your gut hangs over your belt they can be uncomfortable.

Belt Holster- There are a few different types of belt holster. Not sure what kind you're refering to.

Tactical Holster- I have no idea what this means.

Leather-A well made leather holster lasts a long time can be comfortable and can look pretty.

Kydex-Ugly leather alternative. It's relatively cheap and durable.

Nylon- Cheap and comfortable. It needs internal structural material to hold its shape and for better weapon retention.

Tactical means it is black and is used by "Operators", this definition fits anything termed "Tactical". Tactical pocket knives, tactical clothes, tactical boots, tactical wheelbarrow, tactical sunglasses, etc. and so forth. You are throwing a pretty loose and wide verbal rope when using the word tactical the way folks tend to use it these days. The term "Operator" needs to go in file 13 as well.

As far as paddle holsters go, and in an effort to remain on task, I have found that a good paddle is quite comfortable as a long term carry option. As has been pointed out, it can be uncomfortable for folks with spare tires around their middles. It is not as easily concealed as an IWB (Inside the Waist Band) holster. I have found the IWB to be the most easily concealed carry method for a full or medium sized handgun, but I do have certain pants I use for the IWB so I have a bit more room. OWB (Outside the Waist Band) holsters are comfy and pretty easily concealed. Simply Rugged makes the Sourdough, which I like quite a bit. Don Hume (out of business) used to make a pancake with thumb break and a steel reinforced open front that was just a real slick piece of work. Super comfortable, and fast. It was also easy to draw from a seated position with that rig. I do not believe anyone currently manufactures a copy. Too bad.

Changing the original post changed the meaning and flow of the entire thread. As a result, most of the intervening posts were are now non sequitors.

I'll close this one for now. If a thread on the topic now in the first post is necessary, please start a new one.
