Gun for son. What to get?

I introduced my 10 year old grandson to my 22/45 as his first time pistol shooting.
He was quick to pick up how the pistol worked & sighting.
Now when we get together, he wants to go shoot the 22/45.
I oblige him at every opportunity.

Thank you for all your input. We took your advise and went to the gun shop so he could get the feel and the Ruger SP22 fit him the best, and with the interchangeable grips it can grow with him. I wanted the Semi due to when you shoot IPSC type shoots a wheel gun is a MAJOR disadvantage. I also liked the reciprocating full slide the SP had over the Mark 22/45. I think it will help with better muscle memory for when he graduates to a 1911 or Glock type weapon. I can't wait to get him out to the range this next week so he can give it a try. Dang school always getting in the way of fun!!

Again thank you all for the helpful input

If you can find one used a CZ Kadet .22 would be a great choice. If you want to spend a few more bucks get him a 9MM CZ-75B, and then the Kadet Kit .22LR conversion unit which are still being sold, and available. They are a bit pricey though at around $400, but it will give him a gun to learn center fire as well as practice with .22.

If you are looking for a DA/SA that is a relative bargain, the SR-22 is a good choice also, but a bit small for some. Other than that the Ruger MK series, and Browning Buckmark are tough to beat.

Ruger

Depending on the amount you are willing spend, look at: Volquartsen MKIII Custom Pistols.

If you can get your hands on a decent Mk I, II or IIIyou can get a Vol

My kid is on a scholastic shooting sports foundation pistol team, there are 3:2 buckmarks to rugers and onlt one 1911 in 22 (a sig). The Sig is reliable, the buckmarks are too. But the rugers.... not so much.

It's not the gun, but the ability if the owners to clean them. The rugers are very "interesting" to strip down and reassemble to get the action clean, so most have come dirty and have problems. The rugers when clean, are great.

I hear m&p model 22s are out now. Easy progression to centerfire there too.

Please check out Browning'sBuckmark line of 22's.A full line that's been well proven over time and backed by a fine company.I've always read positive test reports on this line also.A special time for sure. Good Luck :D

I can't knock the Buckmark as a quality rimfire. My dad has one and I try to shoot it whenever I'm back home. Really nice pistol. I'm still going to stand by my suggestion of a 1911 with a slide conversion. You just have a better chance to be able to grow into a "big boy" caliber. I have had a couple Kimber slide conversions and will continue to recommend them. Very nice feeling setup and easy to remove/install as well as clean.

Regardless of the make and model,,,

You need to decide between a Target style or one resembling a duty style pistol.

Target styles are the Ruger Mk and 22/45 series, the Beretta NEOS, S&W 22A, and the Browning Buckmark.

I own all five of these and they are all very nice guns.

Duty style pistols are like the S&W M&P, the M&P Compact, Sig Mosquito, Ruger SR-22, Bersa Thunder 22, etc.

Target styles are all single action with no exposed hammer,,,
They are great for hunting, target shooting, and all around sport shooting.

Duty style pistols can be of different actions.

For example the S&W M&P Compact,,,
Is what is called Hammerless Single-Action.

When you work the action to chamber a round,,,
That action also cocks the internal hammer,,,
There is no way to de-cock the hammer,,,
You rely solely on the manual safety.

The Ruger SR-22 is a SA/DA with exposed hammer and de-cocker,,,
Working the action to chamber a round cocks the hammer,,,
You may de-cock the pistol with the de-cocker,,,
Or as in the S&W M&P Compact,,,
Rely on the manual safety.

Any style of these pistols will do your son very nicely.

Target styles are probably better for paper punching games,,,
The duty styles will be better for self defense training.

My preference is for a SA/DA with exposed hammer and de-cocker,,,
But there is absolutely nothing wrong with the other types.
