Gun for my wife

I was beginning to think that maybe she is doing this to please her husband? She doesn't sound like she really wants to do this, and if she doesn't, then maybe a can of pepper spray would be a better alternative.

He seems to be doing a lot of "talking her into" doing stuff (CCW, going to the gun store etc.). Just my way of saying that I agree that it doesn't sound like she really wants to do this, but is going along either out of exasperation and trying to get him off her back, or because she doesn't know how to say "no".

Just my 2 cents, I could be way off base.
 
I tried telling my mom for years that she should carry... What convinced her? She came home to 2 ghetto kids with guns ransacking the house. Her nightstand 9mm did no good when they were there first. The best gun is the one you got with ya.

I went through the same drill with my wife a few months ago. The big difference though is that my wife will not be carrying the weapon for the foreseeable future ( local requirements vs time to fulfill them). Basically, my wife has little recoil tolerance and not enough strength for MA compliant double action triggers or most slide racking operations. She wound up getting a 2.5" 686 which she shoots single action. She is really happy with it and a pretty darn good shot. I can tell she really likes her gun because she doesn't like when I go near it. :p My wife has gone from being an anti to a gun owner :D
 
Some of these suggestions are not taking the original order at hand, and are trying to steer you to a full size, and somewhat heavy handguns for a half size person that is recoil sensitive.

I honestly could not steer you, or her, to the right revolver only because I don't own a 22 revolver, neither do I know much about 22 revolvers, but those NAA could be complicated in a "panic" situation.

The NAA is not a point and shoot gun. It's a pull the hammer, then point and shoot, pull hammer again, point and shoot, now just do that three more times in less than a second.

Somebody mentioned the Walther P22 (22lr), nice size gun for smaller hands, but yet it would fit a larger hand also. You may, or may have not considered a 22lr, but when she (Your wife) can shoot 11 rounds in center mass in about 2 seconds, that would make a formidable SD gun even for the weaker peoples.

And, she will like it!
 
I would seriously look at the new 327 Magnum. 6 shots in a j-frame size gun with some very impressive power. It can also shoot 3 other related calibers that are lower powered for practice.

Can shoot the 32 H&R in that gun, if I remember correctly.

Also Smith makes a Jframe chambered for the 32 H&R, w/ and w/out hammer.

As noted-let HER decide. Try to rent and shoot OR find a local club that has a 'pistol night' of shooting. Ask some of the shooters to shoot their gun(s). We had visitors drop in once in a while. We always let them shoot 'what we had' or made arrangements to bring something else the next week so they could 'try it'.
 
.22 Win Mag.
Its a very potent and managable round at close range. I have an Arminius (sp) revolver in this caliber and I am quite happy with it.
 
Exposing her to a few different types and actions and shooting them and then having her pick out the best one for her is the best way.
