Gun for grandma...

Revolver. .38 special. (something bigger than a J-frame).
With a slicked up and tuned double action.

You want her to be able to shoot it more than once and .40sw has quite the snap.

Well to bring this bag around. Grandma got robbed at a store. No kidden. Yet to hear all the details of what happened though. She wasn't carrying, so i guess I need to work on that.

Buy her a dog. Big and mean or small and yappy, her choice. Upgrade her locks. Buy her an alarm with 911 dialing and an outside horn to bring the neighbors running. Guns, especially for inexperienced shooters or folk that may have trouble handling them, are last on the list. Not the first.

Read your new post. Glad Grandma wasn't seriously hurt or killed but you realize that had she been packing things might have gotten worse for her? Looks like she got by just fine without one. A gun ain't to keep you from getting robbed. Heck, give em what they ask for is the best idea even if you are carrying. Guns are to keep you from getting severely hurt or killed.

Colt Police positive. 70 year old guns. The triggers started nice and most are worn so smooth now you will end up wanting one yourself. 38 SW is most common and 38 special the most powerful available. only about $250-$400

I'm just worried that the robbers wont be satisfied with contents of purse. There was a chopshop found in Jackson very recently, and a guy carjacked an old lady, raped her and beat her to death. These are the things I'm worried about, not a few credit cards. There's a lot of sicko's who like to prey on old ladies. Sure, this time she was just robbed, what about next time?

Gun for Grandma

I agree, upgrade her door locks and window locks, put some spot lights outside the house to turn on at night, make sure she has a phone available to dial 911 and get her either a Beretta Tomcat .32 or a Walther .32 and either get her some shooting time with it or take it to the range and shoot it yourself to make sure it's shooting well.

My mom has a Beretta 21 in .25ACP and can no longer even pull the trigger single action. She is in her mid 70's and wants to find a gunsmith to lighten the action. I don't know of one that does that anymore with liability concerns and it doesn't seem that bad to me.

I'd like to get her into something better than .25 but I don't know what to say other than maybe she doesn't need to have a gun if she can't operate it.

I've given up on an elderly friend of mine that keeps saying she wants a gun. However, this thread has got me thinking again. My first suggestion was a shotgun in 20ga, which was rejected, as well as the Beretta tomcat.

But someone mentioned a 22 pump, and I am now thinking a Taurus model 72 carbine in 22mag would probably fit the bill. Easy to use, single action trigger, cartridge that is mean enough to hurt but without the recoil to hurt her, and small and "cute" enough for her female sensibilities (I kid you not, she's got em).
