Gun for girlfriend

My wife has a Taurus PT111 G2 in 9mm. She picked it out and she shoots it very well. She is petite with small hands and this fit her hand very well and since she picked it out there was no negative man thing in the choice.

By the way, she shoots my 1911 in .45acp very well too. So even with small hands confidence and practice made her a good shot.

My girl is 5'3. Her guns of choice are either an s&w 642 38 special snub nose or a compact Walther PPS. The Walther is a real gem. Easy to rack with a great smooth trigger. I liked hers so much I bought one myself.

Depends on the threat. Is it some 6'4" 250lb bubba who just got out of the pen or a 5'8" 150lb emo? If the lady has never shot a gun until you taking her today, I'd stay away from semi's and go with a small revolver. Chambering depends on the threat for someone completely unfamiliar with firearms, IMO.

The Shield is the answer. Don't settle for one of the little guns that are hard to shoot and break all the one. Shield is accurate and controllable is rapid fire.

Even my wife shoots it well. She's 5'2". She also LOVES her Walther P99, but that's a bit bigger for carry.

If the lady has never shot a gun until you taking her today, I'd stay away from semi's and go with a small revolver.

I respectfully disagree with that sentiment. The double action pull on a revolver is REALLY challenging for a newbie. Semi-autos are much easier to be accurate with for inexperienced shooters in my experience.

Teaching how to rack the slide is easy. She's seen it done on TV a billion times! :)

I have a Glock 26 and a M&P BG380. My Wife has a Sig P238. She loves it.
Has a safety and easy trigger pull and the slide operates easy. Nice gun. My M&P trigger is a bear.
The G26 is a big gun compared to the other 2. I carry it and the BG380 half and half, depending on how I'm dressed.

I will say the P238 or P938 are nice options. My wife really liked the P938 despite small hands and an admittedly not good tolerance for recoil.

I agree with the sentiment of some of the others that she needs to get some training, education, and knowledge before running to buy a gun.

There's a lot to be said for learning how to avoid trouble in the first place, hopefully avoiding the use of one at all. Avoiding blind corners, staying in well lit public areas, walking with friends, etc would be a good start.

In addition, at home, dead bolts, home alarms that tie into law enforcement, and even a safe room, if that's feasible.

Putting a gun in the hands of a person that's totally unfamiliar with them makes me really skittish.

Go with what she is comfortable shooting, and she needs to train so she can employ it under adverse conditions, like in the dark after waking up, and from a purse or concealed carry rig.

You can take her to gun show or shop and try different styles in her hand. A gun shop with an indoor range might assist in trying out different guns.

Safety is always paramount.

g.willikers and one or two others emphasized overall situational awareness and self-defense training as priority over just focusing on which gun.
Can she also take a few classes in Krav Maga in the area?

Even muggers often can Not be heard running up to you from your 6 o'clock. Then the gun is useless, or worse.

As for the Walther PPK/S (.380), I'm 5'11" and sometimes shoot an Enfield "Jungle Carbine" rifle with No recoil pad.

But shooting the PPK/S was a little uncomfortable and also has a heavy DA pull.
Seemed very similar to the little Polish P-64 owned by two friends.

First and foremost, get her set up with training pronto. If you can find a female instructor who does private lessons, your GF will be in better shape.

A lot of talk about the pistol, little talk about how she might carry it. If she keeps a handbag with her at all times, she can get a concealed carry handbag and go with a larger gun; if she generally wears tight jeans and no handbag, something like the Kel Tec P32 with a good pocket holster may be preferable.

I was asked by a female friend for an opinion on handbags (don't ask me why because my only qualification is that my uncle was a handbag marketing rep); so I did some online research, and I came across this video:

The bag, found on the guntotenmamas.com site, can be configured to allow access from either side or the top. Most of the others just allow access from one side or the other. I think that having a hand in the purse from the top just tells onlookers that she may have car keys, cell phone, or a whistle - the side carry ones make it a bit more obvious that there is a firearm involved.

The LS9 is a great gun and when I used it for my every day carry, actually liked and used the safety. Other guns to consider: Colt Mustang; Sig P238; Walther PPK.

Obviously, there are a number of revolvers that she might like.

I know this is a question that is correctly answered, " have her shoot a bunch and she can pick the one best for her." That is the optimal scenario but is not feasible at this time. She is being stalked and I need to arm her now. She is 5'2" and probably 100 lbs. with correspondingly small hands. I'm taking her shooting tomorrow and will be with her through Sun. and she needs to have something by next week. I am going to let her shoot what I have on hand, Ruger MKII .22, S&W model 10, Walther PPK, Ruger P94, Browning Hi-Power, Betetta PX4. After I let her shoot these as much as she & I are comfortable with, we are going shopping. I'm guessing with her small hands the .22 and PPK, possibly Beretta will be the only ones that will fit right. In my mind I'm thinking the Ruger LC9 will probably be at the very top of the list when we get into the store but I'm not crazy about an external safety. Any other semi small gripped pistols I should be thinking of. Really don't want to get into small compacts, sub compacts like LCP, kel tecs etc.

Looking at the mentioned guns and not knowing or seeing the young lady I would suggest the S&W Model 10. If she can point and pull a trigger in a panic mode that simple revolver would be my suggestion. They do not come any simpler.

Like the author of a previous post, I have not found too many beginners who enjoyed .38 snubs, especially among those small in stature and hand size. The short sight radius, heavy DA trigger, and, in the lightweights, significant recoil impulse, make them challenging to shoot well for many. This lady needs to gain immediate confidence in her ability to shoot her handgun, not develop skills over several range visits. I would go with something that she shoots well right off the bat.

My first though on reading the situation wasn't handgun selection, though, it was restraining order. I know paper doesn't stop crime, but it provides a record of having justified concerns, trying to resolve them, cooperation with authorities and, if the time comes that a firearm has to be used, the sense that the stalker was knowingly making himself or herself a threat and that options other than armed defense were decreasing or eliminated.

For HD, 4" 357 and shoot 38 specials out of it.

For carry, an LCR in 327 Federal. If the 327 rounds are uncomfortable, 32 H&R magnum is effective and easy to shoot. It will even shoot 32 S&W long, which has absolutely minimal recoil and is way more effective than 22's.

I have taught a whole lot of people to shoot. Revolvers are WAY more intuitive and easier to use for a beginner, IMHO.

Dispense with your girlfriend's size, physical size DOESN'T matter when it comes to shooting! Forget revolvers, they're antiques and harder to shoot for beginners. Stay away from little guns, they SUCK for anyone, novice or not! Ultimately she'll decide what's best, but try a Glock Gen4 G19. Firepower/concealability can't be matched!

b92fs has it spot on.

I don't believe in the 'guns for girls' thing.

Every woman I've dated and/or trained to shoot has shot at least a Glock 19, Glock 22, and Sig P229. The only limitation is trigger reach, and even then, the Sig has a Short Reach trigger available to deal with that.

They have all shot rather well, and generally preferred the Glock 19.
