Gun Firsts

Wanted when growing up?

Shot as a kid?

Received as a gift?

Bought for yourself?

Regretted buy or selling?

Wanted growing up: A "German Luger." I used to drool over the Hunter's Lodge ads in The American Rifleman for $39.95 Lugers

First gun I shot as a kid was a Daisy Model 25 BB gun.

First gun(s) I received as a gift were two rifles that my father had sent back from Europe during the war.

First gun I bought for myself was a Browning 1922 in .32 acp, which my mother discovered and brought a horrible manure storm down on my head. (I was 15 at the time; I had paid some guy $5 that was 21 to buy it for me:D)

Regrets? I have many. Too many guns got sold that shouldn't have been. Probably the worst cases were all the .45s I sold a few years back shortly after my cancer operation; Didn't want to leave a mess for my kids to deal with in case I died.

My first was a gift from my father,a used but nice Ithica 22 single shot lever action saddle gun age 8 or 9.Gave it to my little brother on his 12th b-day, That was 37 yrs.ago and he still has it.First I bought 11yrs old was a Mossburg 410 3 shot bolt action and for a couple of years no bushy tail or grouse was safe.wish I still had it nothing special except to me,Now!traded it to buy a marlin 30-30 at 14, I took a moose that yr. with it ,my first big game harvest.It was the gun that I just seemed to never miss with never should have sold it.Traded for a Rem. pump 06.wanted more power.Many have been bought,sold or traded since those days.I have quite a few hand guns,revolvers,pistoles,shot guns and rifles these days but my fondess memories are of my first guns.

I'm limiting this to handguns.

WANTED - .357 mag (loved the Colt Pythons used in Magnum Force)

SHOT - .45ACP Remmington Rand (boot camp, Parris Island, SC)

RECEIVED - Never rec'd anything from anybody, although my first issued gun was a 2 Inch SW Mod 19 when I went on embassy duty. Carried Federal .38Spl Nyclad +Ps in it (also issued).

BOUGHT - .45ACP custom Essex 1911 match gun

REGRETTED - .45ACP AMT Hardballer (crap, now I'm reminded of it)

WANTED: 1911. I've always loved them. Had a toy one when I was little and whenever my friends and I would play cops and robbers or whatever it was my choice. I'll get around to getting one once the price on .45 comes back down.

SHOT: The single shot Stevens .410 shotgun my dad bought me to learn to shoot with.

RECEIVED: see above

BOUGHT: Remington 870 12 gauge

REGRETTED: Ruger LCP. loved the size, hated the FTF & FTE problems. I got rid of it before they recalled them. I replaced it with a Beretta 92FS, the favorite of all my guns, so it was a good move.

winchester .22

I do not recall the model (I was a kid), but my oldest brother, 10 years my senior, took over the roll of "Dad" after the real one passed.

He was big in shooting and hunting and bought myself and my other brother each a single-shot Winchester .22.

If I remember, you pull back a side bolt (much like an 1100 shotgun), insert a round in the top of the receiver, and this causes the safety to automatically engage.

Disengage the safety, fire and the spent case ejected through the bottom of the receiver.

My big brother . . .

He is with Dad now and left me all of his firearms (my other brother has no interest) . . .

Winchester 101 12 ga.;
Browning Auto 5 12 ga.;
Western Auto .35 Rem.;
Remington Nylon 66;
Ithaca double barrel side by side.

I wish I could be as good a "Dad" as he was in the form of substitution.

Oh, and I still have that Winchester .22 somewhere deep in the back of my gun safe.
