Gun control survey on CNN

I can respect that. I've blocked that channel on my TV for the same reason. I don't want to give them even an accidental ratings boost...

The website does at least provide a platform for dissent and discussion through Disgus. I do try to win hearts and minds there to prevent lefty from having an unchallenged message. The discussion forum associated with each topic is really pretty balanced. I do think a reasoned, considerate message helps sway folks reading who might be on the fence. (Particularly when contrasted to the hatred and hyperbole from the left)

CNN poll: Majority rejecting calls for new gun laws after Isla Vista

Nice work everyone who rallied to protect our rights.

UPDATED: An admittedly unscientific poll on the CNN website Wednesday asking whether the United States needs stricter gun control laws has drawn a lopsided “no” reaction from visitors to the site, with the latest figures showing 68 percent opposition to the question.

Only 32 percent support the notion that American gun laws need to be tightened. This may be partly due to the fact that California, where last Friday’s spree killing rampage occurred, already has some of the toughest gun laws in the nation.

This poll comes just five days after the attack at Isla Vista in which three of the six victims were shot to death. The poll seems to overlook the fact that the other three victims died from knife wounds, a fact not lost on gun rights activists who have been complaining that the overwhelming media attention has been on guns, rather than the alleged killer.

An online poll doesn't do anything to protect our rights. It's bread and circuses.

Supporting 2A organizations, informed voting, and staying in touch with our legislators protects our rights.

Fair enough. Controlling the message and perception is also important.

In an election year politicians will do whatever they think is popular to get votes. If gun control is popular it will be on the agenda. Making certain they know public opinion is against gun control, will cause it to be avoided...

The article also makes it clear they read the discus discussion on CNN as well. Our measured calm fair persuasion countered the hyperbole of the antis attempting to capitalize on this tragedy.

The only poll that really counts is those caused by letters, phone calls and e-mails to congress telling them your feelings on the issue and that you will vote accordingly.

So if you want to influence a position, call, write, e-mail your congressman/senator.

This works not only on the national level but the local level as well.

Yes, it’s better to win than lose something like this, but it really means very little. I noticed that only about 2500 people actually voted and as of right now TFL has about 1000 active users. So, how many TFL users voted? How man voted twice?

I voted 5 times...LoL
Even thought the poll doesnt mean too much, the fact that its from cnn it can influence some of their readers. And they will not be able to use the poll result anywhere. Too many uninformed people will believe what they are fed. Well cnn had a poll and 75 % of American are for more gun law so im wirh the majority.....blah blah blah

We had this up on other firearms sites as well. This wasn't purely TFL members turning the tide, but it was a big help with such a small poll.

The positive side is we won't be hearing Obama stating "90% of Americans favor stronger gun control" as a result of this poll...

Yes we will. That figure was questionable to begin with, but that didn't stop them from using it. It's good rhetorical ammo for them.

As I said, trivial surface questions are useless except for PR purposes. That's what the media uses them for.

More gun control means to the middle American - keep them from nuts and criminals - not ban them. The latter is what is portrayed.

Why bother? There's a new one of these every day, and given how easily small groups can influence the results, they're not taken very seriously. This is about as effective as those petitions on the White House site.

So the alternative is to NOT participate in polls, and make it appear that 80% or more want more strict gun control... is that the message we want CNN, a powerhouse in media, to push...?

It takes more effort, and is counter productive, to grouse about how polls are a waste of time, than to just vote or remain quiet on the topic and let those of us who WANT to do something - well, do something! Perhaps it means little. Or perhaps it's CNN's lead story on a slow news day. The CNN looping played at airports, hotel lobbies, etc. all day, this story gets airplay 100 times in a day. And perhaps CNN tires of 'losing' the stupid polls and quits doing them...

Turns out, the examiner wrote a piece about the majority of folks rejecting new gun control. http://www.examiner.com/article/cnn-poll-majority-rejecting-calls-for-new-gun-laws-after-isla-vista

May not mean much, but like most things in life, it's a game of inches, slowly pushing the needle in one direction, verses having it go against you. Every inch counts.

For what it's worth

We don't need to vote multiple times

The other side uses deceit at every turn

Let's not lower ourselves to their level
