Gun cleaning.

I bought a kit for a 9mm to clean out my XDM. I was watching a video on youtube about gun cleaning, and the guy was cleaning his barrel out with a brush.

The only brush in my kit was a round wire brush about the size of the inside of the barrel, but I was afraid it would scratch the inside of the barrel if I used it. Am I correct, or is that what this brush if for?

That's why the brush is in the kit - it should be brass, maybe bronze and is much softer than the steel of your barrel. I use my battery drill with a brush on a rod and really get it scrubbed up.

Follow the directions in your owner's manual and the kit and you'll have no problems

thanks, oneounceload

I think it's bronze. It's really stiff though and I've been told that scratching the inside of the barrel is really bad news.

This brush is totally safe to use inside the barrel then? I started to put it in the end of the barrel a little, but it seemed too snug so I backed it out.

Any brush included in a gun cleaning kit is going to be MUCH softer than your barrel. You're in more danger of scratching it with the rod or metal parts holding the brush fibers than the brush itself.

Think of the abuse a gun barrel takes when you pull the trigger. They're not THAT easy to scratch. Just be careful and you'll be fine.

What a relief.

Thanks, you guys.

I feel so much better. I started to put it in the end, but it was really tight and the bristles on that thing were fierce.

I was thinking what an idiot I was. I figured I probably scratched the inside even though I couldn't see any.

Do those brushes normally fit that tightly at first?

Keeping the bronze brush wet with bore cleaner or such is good. Running something dry can scratch anything.

Other than that it should take about 200 years before you notice any wear.:)

If I didn't, am I still okay this once?

Yes, but being wet is the real saver. Just like cleaning glass. Clean dry and you can scratch, wet no problem. Now your final cotton patches can be dry except for what they naturally pick up in the barrel.

On patches. Purchased ones are good, but (like many) I cut-up and use old white cotton "T" shirts. They work great.

BTW, normal bore cleaner will not remove much copper fouling. Buy premium grade or foam type to remove copper fouling.

How confident am I that you're fine? You can come clean my guns for practice if you want.

Basically, if you're actually aware that you COULD scratch the barrel then you're unlikely to do anything that WILL scratch the barrel. It's the oblivious idiot you have to be worried about.;)

I haven't used them yet, but are paper towels okay on any part of the gun?

I don't like them much. Wet parts of the towels can get into the works. Just use cotton cloth and you can't go wrong.

So I'm a cautious idiot. Thank god for that. ;)

It's better than the alternative. :D

I use an old tooth brush for cleaning the majority of the residue out from the slide, ramp, etc. If it's on there really bad, I have a small brass brush that I use as well, or I may use the bore cleaning brush.

I use paper towels when I am out of bore patches and have not had any issues. You need to watch it though because there is a lot of "lint" that comes off paper towels. Grab some bore patches, I use shotgun patches because they are bigger.

For a reference point, keep in mind that you may end up shooting tens of thousands of copper jacketed bullets down that barrel at 1000+ ft/s with 10's of thousands of psi of super hot gases behind them. In a long shooting session, there will be lots of powder residue and carbon in there as well, being scraped along with the bullet. None of that will hurt your barrel and will take years to wear it out. So vigorously hand-pushing a bronze brush up and down it will not even be noticed.

Seriously, it's just NOT that delicate a piece of steel.

Enjoy!

I my dictionary an Idiot is someone who THINKS they know what they are doing and won't believe evidence to the contrary.

Then you have stupid, they know they don't know but seem unable or unwilling to learn.

Finally you have uninformed. The uninformed may or may not think they know, but are willing to listen either way when someone presents a reasonable explanation or argument. It's is also commonly referred to as "Willingness to Learn"

From your post I'll say you fell under the "uninformed" at the beginning and have been sufficiently taught and have moved up to "informed" on the subject.

:p

Ya, I'm a little crazy on occasion and right now I'm bored!

New question.

Is there any sort of consensus on how often to clean your gun? I've heard some people say you should after every time you fire it. I've had other people tell me that your safe going much longer.
