Gun cleaning solvents?

I've come to believe that Hoppes is a cleaning antique, though still somewhat useful, and that better options are out there. After reading some info in this forum (Unclenick provided it), I bought and used some of the new water based copper remover on what I thought was a very clean barrel (cleaned with Shooter's Choice, Butch's Bore Shine and an ammonia based copper remover). In short, I found that the barrel still had much copper still in it. Now I've ordered the Boretech Eliminator for the copper and the Slip2000 Carbon Killer. I'm going to try those out in the next 10 days, as I work up some new loads for a few rifles. If there's anything worth reporting, I'll pass it along.

My Dad Always Used This Mix...

50% mineral spirits, 50% kerosene to clean his guns. I have never had any problems with this mix. It will do nothing for copper build up, if you have copper fouling you will need to use something to cut it. Try Hoppes #9 as many other have stated. Hoppes #9 has mineral spirits, kerosene and ammonia in the mix. Or you could try CLP sometime, it's a mix of 45% Kerosene, 45% Mineral Spirits and 10% #5 weight motor oil. I uuse Hoppes Gun Oil and Gun Grease for lubrication. ;)

I use breakfree CLP because it in an aerosol can and I can get it at wal-mart.

One of the best things I've bought for cleaning my guns is one of those aerosol electronic duster thingys. It makes getting cleaner and gunk out of small areas a breeze.

I just ordered some slip2000 carbon killer also since I will be shooting my rifle again this weekend. I can compare it to M-Pro7 and Eezox which have proven far better then Hoppe's #9. I also want to get some Wipe Out foam and see what that does. I like the idea of not using a brush if possible. I'll report back in here what I find.
