Gun Choice of CC Class?

cwok - in Texas, the following caliber floors for CHLs are codified:

"Handguns must be at least .32 caliber semi-automatic or .38 caliber non-semi-automatic."

And as you pointed out, if you qualify with a revolver, you get a CHL for revolvers only. If you qualify with a semi-auto, you get a CHL for both revolvers and semi-autos.

See the Texas DPS website's PDF for specifics on CHL requirements.

Check with the class instructor you choose as far as what is required. Here in Missouri, you have to show "knowledge" of both a revolver and semi-auto. No requirement is made as far as caliber. After 50 rnds of practice between the two types of firearms, you choose which to shoot for qualifying. For the official test, you shoot 20 rnds at a B24 silhouette target and are required to hit the silhouette portion 16 out of the 20 at 7 yds.
In my class the instructor supplied the guns, or you could use your own if you preferred. I figured what the heck, his guns and ammo for the price of the class. First I shot 10 rnds of 22 rimfire out of a S&W 617 (Dang it, now I want one!!!), and then 10 rnds from a Browning Buckmark. That was all he needed to se so he then had me choose which one to qualify with. I shot 20 rnds to the center of the B24 target with the Browning, and that was that. About 10 minutesd in all. The remainder of the 8 hour class was about legal responsibility, the CCW laws in Missouri, and because of it being a small class in which everyone was already familiar with firearms, a very basic going over of firearm types.

This thread makes me laugh bringing up seeing people try to qualify, and what they use. 7" Ruger 22 targets gun's (That's just cheating), 6" revolvers using single action, but wait there's more, but I degrease.:D

And I've heard other stories from the range master's too.

I qualified with my new to me at the time, my S&W 638 Airweight 38spl 1 7/8" barrel. I had about 5 or 6 flyer's, but they all stayed in the 8's (7s are bad "no score"), but it still made me nervous, but I passed. I had some 5" PC revolver I could have used, but my pried after hearing all that stuff, it made me use my "true carry gun" to qualify, and I make love to her every night (Just Kidding):D.

"maybe"

If you're familiar with the gun you intend to carry, I see no reason not to bring a .22 and save some money. I don't know about Iowa, but here in Ohio we have to score something like 4 of 6 shots on a silhouette target (anywhere on paper) at 5' 10' and 15' or something similar. No restrictions on pistol vs. revolver.

If I'd have brought one of my carry guns, it would have just served to waste ammo at those ranges. At 15' with my 1911 I can just about shoot a smiley face "Lethal Weapon" style. It's not like we did IDPA type courses of fire. The class was 10 hours of lecture and 20 minutes of shooting, most of which involved the instructor showing people who bought a gun the day before the class how to use it (scary).

That is really amazing to me that Iowa is just now passing a Shall Issue law. I moved from Texas to Iowa for a brief time in 1969 when Texas didn't even have permits, but I got an Iowa permit to carry because I traveled for a living. Iowa even had open carry which blew me away at the time.

Congratulations for finally getting your Shall Issue Law.

As stated by a couple of posters above Texas has a revolver only liscense for thost that qualify with a revolver. They are stuck with either a revolver or derringer for carry. If you qualify with a semi you can cary what ever you like. Provided it is concealed. Open carry is illegal. Caliber restriction for qualification is .32 acp or larger. There is also no limit to the number or guns you can carry. Provided again that they are concealed.
Note it is also legal in Texas to carry in your car without a CHL. It must be concealed. You can carry it from your car to your house, or your place of buisness if you own the buisness, as long as it concealed. Without a CHL.

I've taken the class in both Louisiana and Missouri.

In Louisiana the class and shooting were more intense. Longer class time and we had to reload with timed fire at difference distances. We could use whatever we wanted to use. My dad used a GP100 .357 and I used a 92FS 9mm.

In Missouri (St. Louis county) we were not allowed to bring our own weapon. Everyone had to use a .22, both revolver and semiauto. You could then choose which weapon you wanted to qualify with but you had to shoot both. Not sure if that is the law or just the class we took.

As others have stated, I would check with your instructor and see what they say about it.

Good luck!

In Missouri (St. Louis county) we were not allowed to bring our own weapon.

That isn't in the law in Missouri. In fact that is the first time I have heard of an instructor requiring the student to use the guns provided by the class.
Of course, as you stated, it was in the Peoples Republic of St. Louis County!!!

I took the class with a .22lr Ruger older RST. They rec carrying a Sig in .40 or larger. They based their rec on FBI and hospital data detailing gun shot wounds and deaths. The instructors Sig had well over 250,000 rounds through it and when I shot it was as tight as the day he bought it. He said at 400,00 rounds he will send it back to sig to get the gun looked over.

I carry a Para Nite Hog in .45acp.

Check on the rules for your state.

Some have limits based on the type of gun you qualified with and some may still ID the actual gun you can carry by serial number.

With the later your choices are eliminated.
