Besides bear spray, what is the best handgun & handgun ammo when it comes to defending against a grizzly bear?

LOL

Nice one.

I'd have to guess big and nasty. We don't have grizzlies here in the south unless it's a zoo.

My guess would be a .44 Mag, .454 Casull, a Linebaugh round, .50 AE, or a .460 or .500 S&W Mag

Cuz if one of those monsters is angry, you gonna need either big and nasty or a whole lot of high pressure rounds to stop it.

Grizzly bears are big, thick, tough and just down right nasty. The biggest gun
you can hold and still pack would be my suggestion.

I'm going to post a thread someday asking how many members have actually used a handgun or seen a handgun used against grizzlies.

The S&W 500. If the incredibly intimidating looks don't scare the bear away, the punch this thing packs will do some damage!

I read an article once written by a guy who hunted really large grizzlies with a .500 S&W. He stalked the bear to get (too) close, and then had to empty the revolver into the bear before it fell. He also had a guy with a big-bore rifle for backup.

That said, you can't kill something if you can't hit it.

So, the correct answer is the biggest, most powerful cartridge you can shoot well enough to hit a bear with. Anything less will leave you wanting more, and anything more won't serve you well if you can't hit the bear with it.

+1 to ENOUGHgun.

It's like the old safari joke...

White Hunter: How did you survive a lion attack?
Native Guide: I ran away.
White Hunter: How did you outrun a lion?
Native Guide: I didn't. I outran the guy who missed the lion.

Can't remember exactaly where it happened but a bear attack I think in WA state in the last couple of days resulted in one maybe two deaths and several people hurt. Seems the bear did a SWAT raid on the camp and did not plan on taking any prisoners. No mention in the media about any guns in camp.

Racking the slide on a 12 ga should do it....

Wasnt the bear attack in yellowstone just last week? One dead 2 injured?

Best to use avoidence methods, loud noise etc if in bear country, if camping as I do, simply place a open pack of hot dogs under the camper three of four rows over.......escape when you hear the screaming....

Actually I did do this in Custer park in Mich due to racoons fighting over the hot dogs, kept the neighbors up :) and the coons out of my camp.

Not far from where I was camping three weeks ago. It was in Montana....

I was there, in a tent with my dog. Lucky, no peed off Grizzly looking to maul someone. I had some super bear spray from Cabelas that is supposed to be one of the best. But, I also had a .40 Beretta, loaded at night with FMJ rounds, and a Ruger .454 Alaskan that was in arms length from my sleeping bag.

I figured if the spray didn't work, the Alaskan might, and if all else fails, 15 rounds of .40.

Honestly, if a bear decides to start attacking you in a tent, the best defense might be the terrible smell emitting from your drawers.

I have a fair amount of confidence in well placed .357 Magnum or 10mm but the truth is that I just don't ever want to test the theory!

Just get a Mossberg 12 guage 18 inch shotgun and good Brenneke slugs.

If you want, jazz it up with a tac-star side saddle and a bantam stock.

But it will do the deed as good as anything and it's a whole lot cheaper than any fancy handcannon or elephant rifle.

is it ok if I just carry a 45 70 guide gun and sleep with it under my pillow?

the model 29 is for when I'm half way down his throat. I'm aiming for the heart.
