grips for a 44 mag

Hey guys, I need some advice-

I’ve got a S&W 629 Classic in 44 mag. Right now I’ve got a Hogue Monogrip on it, and it’s okay. I’d hate to shoot the thing with wood grips! Anyway, I was looking at my dealer’s catalogue and he can order a grip made by Pachmeyr called the Decelerator. They make a Compac Decelerator, which has finger grooves, and a Gripper Decelerator which doesn’t have finger grooves.

Have any of you tried these Declerator grips? Do they offer any advantage over the Monogrip? They cost $28.50 – is that a good price?

Thanks for the help!

$28.50 is a GOOD price! These are really good grips. I have Decelerater grips on my Colt Anaconda that I hunt with. I thought that mine were the "gripper model", and they have finger grooves. Make sure before he orders them, unless he won't charge you until you get what you want. The decelerater grips and pads are made from the softest rubber that I could find. They help with the recoil and feel great! Hope this helps.

What is wrong with wood grips? So it's like catching baseballs with your bare hands. :)

It's the looks that count.

From what Randy Garrett of http://www.Garrettcartridges.com was saying in another thread the vast majority of his customers have Pachmeyer's on their revolvers.

I'm going to be getting rid of the Houge grips on my 629 classic and going with the Pachmeyers one of these days.

Big Al, just ordered a set of Pachmayr Decelerators for my Ruger Redhawk today from www.wholesalehunter.com - cost was $22. Thats the best price I could find anywhere. My understanding was the Decelerator grips, at least for the Redhawk, were of the finger groove style only. I guess I better double check that out if its not too late. Al, did a quick check and the gripper grips for your S&W are $20.(place I told you about) - looks like you'll get a better deal than I will.

Highly recommend Decelerators for wheels; all six of mine wear them.

Really takes the sting out of my 45LC Redhawk (300gXTP at 1309fps).

I have a 5" 629 "Classic", it came with the Hogue grips but I changed them out for the S&W round butt (R/B) wood combat grips. I my hand the wood grips are much easier with 240gr, 1425fps, handloads. I even whittled them down a bit so they fit like a glove. The R/B profile lets the gun roll back under recoil, like a S/A plow handle grip (though S/A & R/B grip designs look nothing alike). The Hogue Monogrip has a square butt profile (even though the gun has a R/B). Under recoil it comes straight back into my hand, yeow! Hogue has a new grip called the Bantam which is a true R/B. They plan to make it for the J-Frame and K&L-Frame. Will be interesting to see if they bring it out for the N-Frame. I bought a pair of Pachmayr Gripper Prof. for a 686 once, the fit was so poor I sent'em back for a refund, gaps everywhere. -- Kernel

UGH!!!!!!! Everybody carries the N frame SQUARE butt Pachmayr Decelerators but I can't find Pachmayr Decelerators for a N frame round butt anywhere.

Pachmayer has them listed on their web page, but if I order them from Pachmayers web site they are $37.00 and the wife will Hang & Quarter me if I spend that much :( :( :(

HELP!!!!!! Who else carries Pachmayr Decelerators for a round butt N Frame 629 Classic at a 1/2 way decent price??????

Pachmayr Decelerators for a round butt N Frame 629 Classic can be had for a few dollars less at: http://www.gunaccessories.com/

I just ordered a set yesterday and hope they reduce the recoil so that I don't have to wear a glove when shooting my 44 mag.

I'd have to agree with Kernel,
Wood grips let the pistol "roll" back under recoil. I like them better on 3" 629.
Happy gripping,
SM

Ive got to weigh in on the wood side as well......save a little and have a set made to fit your hand,,,,herrets are inexpensive and well made, last year I purchased a set of Jordan troopers for a sqbutt N-frame and the curve of the backstrap reduces felt recoil significantly.....fubsy.

Thanks for the link, these are the kind of grips I was orginally looking for instead of rubber grips.

Did you send in a tracing of your hand or do they stock these grips as standard items?

The last Blue Press from Dillon had Craig Spegel custom cocobolo grips for the N frame.
Not cheap at $60 but they look interesting.

my experience with a 629 classic (5"):
- hogue rubber grips work great.
- s&w wood grips work well but are made of an ugly wood.
- spegel boot grips look great but are murder on my hands.
- eagle clone of spegel boot grips aren't pretty and hurt.
i'm sticking with the hogue rubber grips for now.

Joey,
You send in a tracing and follow the instructions exactly. Be realistic in your hand size, I attmepted to use the jordan troopers and with my hand size it is not a good choice, they work better with larger hands. good luck, i do like mine...fubsy.

Think it will be a tad before we end up getting some different grips. Just sent the 629 back to S&W for a check up. Years ago when we purchased this hand cannon it was labled NIB. However when the gun geek brought out the box it had a second cylinder that looked well used. I asked the geek about the extra cylinder and when nobody could figgure out where it came from the droped the price at my urging!

I've fired almost a box (20) through the revolver and then locked it away. Now after a few years of storage it's getting dusted off and readyed for some serious fun. Since I'll be shooting Garretts 310gr Hammerheads in it I was wondering what's up with the 2nd cylinder and if it will be fine taking that extra punnishment.

After e-mailing S&W customer service a few times they gave me a Fed Ex (cool not UPS)overnight pre paid shipping # so we could return the revolver to them for inspction and repair if needed.

Now I'm in a holding pattern till the 629 comes home from it's checkup by the S&W Doc.

Just got my Pachmayr Decelerator Gripper Grips in today - thought I would give my opinion of them to the guys posting. THEY'RE JUNK !!! I put them on and the fit was terrible! More than an 1/8" (at least) gap in the front where they are supposed to meet. Up under the trigger guard one side is longer than the other by the same distance. The fit totally changed the feel from the stock redhawk grips which I liked. It felt like the grips were as narrow as the frame but increased the width from front to back (trigger to backstrap) alot. Basically it felt like you were wrapping your hand around a cassette tape. The finger grooves were way to far apart. In short - I HATED MINE - sending them back in the morning. Never bothered to shoot with them on, so I couldn't comment on whether or not it helped reduce recoil. I might mention that I had tried a set of Hogues (with the finger grooves) and I didn't like their fit either... but it was ALOT better fit and feel than the Decelerators. Just my opinion for what its worth - thought it might save somebody some time and money. Sh*t, now where do I go from here???

Although I like the 29/629 and used to own one, my personal favorite grip for it is someone else's hand.
