GP100 vs Sr1911

Hey guys, this is my first post here but I've been reading for years. I'm a Ruger fanatic, I love "Made in the USA" products. I'm having trouble deciding on my next hangun. I love the GP100, 20 years of proven reliability, but the new SR1911 is eating at me. Would you guys get the GP100 or the SR1911 ? I've read nothing but great reviews on the 1911 and the GP100 needs no introduction. I'm leaning towards the GP100, I love revolvers, but the 1911 is so attractive. Which one would you guys get first ?

Get the GP100 first then the 1911 when the supply finally catches up with demand. Else your gonna pay more then you need to.

Similar dilemma here... I am sort of torn between the SR1911 and a Vaquero. I can get the Vaquero NOW, and it's cheaper, but I WANT the 1911 more. :)
I'll likely end up continuing the search for the SR1911.

I'd recommend GP100 first as there are plenty of used ones available, while the short suplly of SR1911s is pushing the price to a premium.

GP100s are slightly more useful, too. A .45 is my EDC, but not only would I switch to .357 without a gripe (I have in the past), the .357 is ultimately a way more flexible gun. Here in Iowa, I've used mine to hunt. I don't even know if you can use .45s. I know I wouldn't. At the range, I get a disturbingly solid sense of satisfaction when that guy next to me who has a 1911 actually jumps a little when I touch off a round. If I don't want to be a jerk, I can use 38s.

Venom and the others nailed it... GP100 IMO is a no-lose weapon, and easy to find. Has operated flawlesly for me and in 6" is as accurate as I can hope for. Plus, being a Ruger, accessories are pretty easy to come by.

A nice 1911 is a wonderful thing to have, but having the one you WANT is worth waiting for.

1911 to hard to find

I know what you are sayig but I agree with everyone here. My gun shop had only had 3 Ruger 1911 in the last year. They go the same day. Get the wheel gun.

What adamantium said.

Why buy the best 'deal' if it isn't the one your heart yearns for?

That said, if you WILL buy both eventually, a lot of good advice about order has been given. If you will only own one of them, you have to figure out what you want to do with it, then pick the option that enables you the most.

I was leaning toward the GP100 anyway. I will eventually buy both, but you guys are right, I should wait until supply catches up with demand on the SR1911. These guns are going to be used primarily for recreation shooting and carrying while camping and the such.

I would agree with those recommending the GP100. While the SR1911 may turn out to be an excellent firearm, I'm never too keen on buying a new model of gun until it's been on the market for at least a year or two so that the manufacturer has a chance to get whatever bugs may still be in the system worked out. Also, with demand for the SR1911 far outpacing current manufacturing capability, I can't help but think that QC issues would be less likely in a year or two after demand settles down a bit.

Get which ever one you can find first and buy the other one later. The SR1911 has no bugs and is made by a company that has made 1911 parts for other companies for quite awhile now.

The GP100 is a solid well made revolver. My 6" stainless .357 GP100 was the first firearm I ever purchased (still have it) and still locks up nice and solid.

I have both and could not say to pick one over the other since your talking about a revolver and semi-auto that could be used for different purposes. It's not like your asking about two different 1911s or revolvers so if you like both platforms, you need both. ;)

Shot both of these this past weekend and I really couldn't choose one over the other.

I'm a semi-first kind of guy but there are always exceptions--How can anyone deny both the practicality and mere Beauty of a high-end magnum revolver be it a GP100, Colt Python or Smith 586/686? Don't get me wrong, I would take John Moses Browning's masterpiece first but soon followed by the GP100. There are only a few choices in life whereby one cannot make a wrong decision and you have illustrated one of them whereby all 'logical' considerations are moot and one just goes with their gut on something;).

*Edited to add that the capability to shoot far less expensive .38 ammo in the GP100 is another huge variable if $$$ matters.

-Cheers

I'm not even a revolver guy and want the new Ruger 1911 some day. But even I admit that if I were looking for a revolver, the GP100 would top the list.

It's a tough decision for sure...

The SR1911 would probably make a better carry gun than the GP100, but both are rather heavy for that role.
Both would make fine home defense handguns.
But the GP100 would make a better hunting handgun and possibly a better range plinking handgun.

So, I guess it just depends upon what you want to use it for.

BTW, I don't own the SR1911 yet, but I do own a GP100 and I love it!
